TORONTO, November, 2004 - A recent informal survey by Fairmont Hotels & Resorts has found that even in today's culture, chivalry is indeed alive and well, especially when it comes to something as important as a wedding proposal. According to the wedding proposal survey, 54% of participants chose to drop on one knee when they proposed to their loved ones – and to help celebrate the engagement, a romantic 59% made sure to have a favorite bottle of wine or Champagne on hand.
Some of the other interesting engagement survey findings included:
- 45%, or most of those surveyed, dated one to three years before they decided to propose.
- 54% chose to pop the question locally, while the remainder chose to pop the question on a specially planned trip.
- 55% believe in love at first sight.
- 59% consulted with friends when planning the proposal, while 21% planned everything on their own.
- 54% were confident that their partner would answer with a resounding ''yes'', while 46% were unsure.
When asked about the greatest marriage proposal story they'd ever heard, interviewees responded with a wide variety of creative stories. One man chose to propose to his partner at the Eiffel Tower on a surprise trip to Paris, while another publicly professed his love over the PA system in an airplane. Yet another innovative husband sought the assistance of their pet dog with a wedding proposal note and ring tied to the pooch's collar. As for the ideal bachelor party, the number one answer was hanging out with friends, while the second most popular option was a trip to Las Vegas. Other answers included golf, fishing, and camping.
