When Captain Samuel S. Dunnells successfully steered his 105-ton river steamer, Vaquero, through upper Newport Bay in 1870, James and Robert McFadden rushed from Northern California by stagecoach to mark the inaugural voyage. More than 100 years later, Newport Beach’s harbor is crowded with pleasure, fishing and tour boats. Its streets are busy with shoppers browsing at Fashion Island, tourists enjoying Balboa ice cream bars on Balboa Island and surfers tackling The Wedge or other hot spots along the city’s 6.2 miles of beaches. One hundred years after the McFaddens built what is now Newport Pier, the city still revels in its ocean roots. Back then, only a few dozen summer cottages could be rented, and a few dozen people called Newport Beach home.
This property has played a prominent role within Newport Beach and Orange County since its debut in 1984. The hotel, designed by renowned architect, Gin Wong, has been affiliated with several brands including Le Méridien and most recently, Sutton Place. Over the past two decades, the hotel has served as the traditional gathering place for large conventions, countless weddings, social events and election night galas.
In July 2005, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts assumed management of the property now known as the Fairmont Newport Beach. Fairmont is extremely proud to add this property to its collection of unique hotels and resorts — including four other properties within California. In September 2006, the hotel celebrated its grand opening with a gala event for nearly 900 people. The hotel’s refurbishment — totaling more than $32 million — radiates a new dramatic feel from both an architectural and design standpoint. Now complete, the hotel’s 440 guestrooms, including 56 striking suites, have been re-styled in rich woods and a textured natural palette of rye, chocolate, gold and cayenne, accented with tumbled granite, woven cane and rich British Colonial wood. Designed to capture the style of Southern California, the expansive guestrooms provide a relaxing haven to enjoy Orange County, whether visiting the Fairmont Newport Beach for a corporate retreat, business meeting or a leisurely getaway with friends, family and Fido (yes, the Fairmont Newport Beach is a pet-friendly hotel). To complete the luxury hotel experience, the hotel’s full-service Willow Stream Spa offers more than 8,000 square feet of space, including seven decadent spa treatment rooms with the finest in spa services — using only the best in products and techniques.
Fairmont plans to continue and expand the hotel’s role within the community. The Fairmont Newport Beach will participate in Fairmont’s renowned Green Partnership and Adopt-A-Beach programs.
The Fairmont Newport Beach continues with its charter of “turning moments into memories,” and thanks to you for the opportunity to do so. |
