PROPERTY OVERVIEW
Since 1907, The Fairmont has stood without peer among hotels in San Francisco. Its ornate terra cotta façade and sumptuous décor resemble a grand European palace. At the same time, The Fairmont San Francisco is famous for its high-tech amenities and gracious hospitality, such as complimentary homemade chicken soup for guests who are feeling “under the weather”.
San Francisco evokes many images -- roller coaster hills, cable cars, dramatic vistas, and fascinating history -- and a stay at The Fairmont captures all of these elements. From its location atop Nob Hill, the hotel offers breathtaking views of the San Francisco Bay Area and is minutes from The City’s many attractions. The Fairmont itself is a popular destination with its legendary lobby, which was immortalized in Aaron Spelling’s television series “Hotel”.
HISTORY
Both San Francisco and The Fairmont trace their roots to the California gold rush of 1849 and the silver strike in nearby Nevada. James Graham Fair, a burly miner who made his fortune from silver, purchased property at the summit of Nob Hill to stake his claim of respectable social standing among the city’s fashionable, elite residences. What was created instead of a residence, however, was a world-class hotel that would play host to international dignitaries and high society.
The Fairmont was scheduled to open on April 18, 1906, the fateful day The Great Earthquake rocked San Francisco. While buildings throughout the city crumbled, The Fairmont’s mammoth Corinthian marble columns braced the hotel from collapse. The hotel acted as the command post for city officials, who sat on crates in the lobby and plotted strategies to halt the inferno engulfing the city. Although the Fairmont’s exterior was left unscathed, the fire eventually ravaged its interior.
Exactly one year after the Great Earthquake, The Fairmont became the first hotel in the city to reopen – a momentous occasion marking San Francisco’s first great stride toward rebirth and rejuvenation. Since then, The Fairmont has maintained its eminence atop Nob Hill and at the top of San Francisco’s thriving cultural life. The hotel continues to host visiting heads of state and celebrities from around the globe and has been the site of many significant historical events – including the creation of the United Nations Charter in 1945.
