Fairmont Hotels and Resorts

Over a century ago Fairmont Hotels & Resorts was founded on an enduring connection to the land, communities and people where we do business.  Then in 1990 our Canadian hotels pioneered The Fairmont Green Partnership, literally writing the book on sustainable best practices in the lodging industry, while developing a comprehensive commitment to minimizing our hotels' impact on the planet.

Today we continue to grow environmental stewardship in ten countries - from setting expectations with external vendors, to daily business decisions affecting hotel construction, operations, renovation and training.  Because the environment isn't just something that's 'out there' - it's where we live, work and play each day.

Worldwide Hospitality Award - Best Corporate Social Responsibility Program, 2006.
On November 9, 2006 during the annual Hospitality Awards ceremony in Paris, France, Fairmont received the designation as Best Corporate Social Responsibility Program for its Green Partnership program. The award recognizes the best example of environmental and humanitarian activity, sustainable development, and the involvement of local populations by hotel groups throughout the world. The Worldwide Hospitality Awards were presented by the MKG Group, an organization associated with HTR Magazine.

Global Tourism Business Award 2006

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts is pleased to announce the latest accolade for its industry leading environmental initiatives. During the 6th Annual Global Travel and Tourism Summit in Washington, D.C, Fairmont was named winner of the prestigious 2006 Global Tourism Business Award. Presented by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTCC), the global business leaders forum for the travel and tourism industry, the award recognizes and promotes the world's leading examples of best practice in responsible tourism development.

OUR PARTNERS
Fairmont is thrilled to announce its latest partnership with the World Heritage Alliance, a joint initiative of the United Nations Foundation and Expedia, Inc., to promote conservation, sustainable tourism, and economic development for communities located in and around World Heritage sites. Leading this new partnership for Fairmont will be the Fairmont Mayakoba, an ecologically diverse resort located on Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, which has been paired with a local tourism network from the nearby Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage site. Community Tours Sian Ka'an, (CTSK) is a tourism service alliance of three tour operators that conduct tours in designated areas, and work closely with the park managers of Sian Ka'an to ensure minimal environmental impact.  Above all, CTSK donates a percentage of its revenue directly to conservation efforts in the reserve.

Fairmont has partnered with the widely recognized US Environmental Protection Agency's ENERGY STAR® Program. This partnership which will focus on the company's fifteen US-based properties, is part of Fairmont's ongoing strategy to streamline its energy performance and reduce both utilities consumption and greenhouse gas emissions throughout its operations. A voluntary program, ENERGY STAR provides businesses with guidelines and resources necessary to achieve and maintain energy efficiency. The program involves ongoing measurement, tracking and benchmarking of a hotel's energy performance.  An innovative energy performance rating system determines each building's eligibility for the ENERGY STAR label.

OUR PROJECTS
Energizing our commitment to 'think globally and act locally' in 2005 Fairmont introduced Eco-Innovations, hotel-based environmental initiatives that encourage partnerships, learning and guest experiences while addressing a universal environmental issue in a way that hits close to home.

Each season we'll be highlighting a few of over 30 projects launched to date, and the dedicated partners who help us make them happen, so check in again soon.

The Fairmont Olympic, Seattle
“A Whale of a Time”
Over the years, there has been a progressive decline in the health of the Puget Sound waterways. The “A Whale of a Time” Project is designed to assist two local organizations (People for Puget Sound and the Whale Museum) that are working to restore Puget Sound to a healthy state. In addition, the project provides an opportunity for visitors and guests of The Fairmont Olympic Hotel to experience Puget Sound in a unique way through the purchase of the “A Whale of a Time” package. A portion of the proceeds are donated to the Whale Museum.

OUR PLANET

Under our Covers
The Fairmont Green Partnership Guide
In 1990, we started asking all our employees how they felt about introducing a hotel green program. They rewarded us with an overwhelming vote of support and the ideas that formed the basis of our first Green Action Plan. In response, we developed the Green Partnership Guide, a comprehensive user manual to help individuals, offices, kitchens and engineers implement our environmental goals. A third edition is now available.
Today, we are proud to note that other hospitality companies, tourism boards and hospitality schools around the world are embracing the Guide and Fairmont's best practices. If you would like to order copies, available English or French, please contact environment@fairmont.com
