In celebration of the Chinese New Year, guests at The Fairmont Kea Lani, Maui will get to experience a traditional lion dance at the main lobby on Tuesday, February 16, at 4:00 pm.  The Chinese Lion Dance goes back some one thousand years.  Two dancers enact the lion.  One handles the head, made out of strong but light materials like paper-mache and bamboo, the other plays the body and the tail under a cloth that is attached to the head.  The head dancer can move the lion's eyes, mouth and ears for expression of moods.  The lion dance combines art, history and kung fu moves.  Three musicians, playing a large drum, cymbals and a gong, accompany the lion.  Every kind of move has a specific musical rhythm.

Traditionally, participants would place red envelopes stuffed with a small amount of money into the lion’s mouth.  Their belief was that the symbolic giving of money represented a wish for good fortune and wealth in the coming year.  There will be red envelopes available for guests should they wish to “feed the lion.”
