Discover
Reminiscent of the hot springs that beckoned travellers over 100 years ago, the pulsating waterfalls and the mineral pool in the heart of the Banff spa soothe troubled spirits.
The Beginning
William Cornelius Van Horne had a vision to bring the beauty of the Canadian Rocky Mountains to the rest of the world. He commissioned blueprints for an impressive hotel to be built at the convergence of the Bow and Spray River, in what is now known as Canada's first National Park. Construction began in 1887 and the hotel publically opened on June 1, 1888.
By the start of the twentieth century, the Banff Springs luxury Hotel had developed into one of the top three mountain getaways in North America. Disaster struck in 1926 when the original wooden hotel burnt down. It was rebuilt larger and in its present appearance commencing in 1928.
Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression
Throughout the 1920s and 30s, the hotel was able to combine day-to-day hotel life with the concept of luxurious hotel living. The depression played a part in the 'golden era' as well.
Through the 1940s to 60s, the hotel struggled to reclaim the success it had before the war. The hotel went through a significant change, adapting to the economics of the time. Transportation, convenience and availability to monetary funds jointly changed the whole perspective of the hotel.
"Since we can't export the scenery, we'll have to import the tourists."
William Cornelius Van Horne
By the 70s, the hotel reached a pivotal point. For the first time, Banff Springs remained open for the winter season, becoming a year-round resort destination. The 80s then brought expansion and renovation back to the hotel.

Had trouble with the heat in our upgraded room. The team did try to move our room but I was hosting 40 people and was too busy to even plan the move.
Our group stayed in a gatehouse suite for a 3 day ski weekend. The room had all the amenities and the staff were very accommodating. We used ordered the room service breakfast each morning to geta a jump on our ski days. It was always on time each morning and very tasty. The hotel is a little out of the way but it is only a short walk to Banff for dinner. We appreciated the free hotel tour upon arrival.

We stayed in a Mountain View Room (769) that had a bathroom so small that I had to sit on the toilet at an angle. Will not go in to detail on what was required to "finish" my business. So Cramped!! The shower was just as cramped. I had to bathe sideways, hitting my elbows constantly on the walls. We could not use the kettle and coffee maker at the same time as it would blow the circuit breaker and leave us in the total dark. Had to wait for maintenance to reset the breaker outside of the room. We stayed at this Hotel 4 years ago in a "Suite" for less than half the price of today's rates for an inferior room. We enjoyed some of the best "wings" for lunch at the Rundle Lounge during our last stay. This is no longer available. We sent my daughter and her finance to this resort 2 years ago and they raved about the same wings at the Waldhaus. No longer available. The hours at the Waldhaus make absolutely no sense (open at 4PM, 3PM on weekends with a very limited menu). Lunch at this resort is a challenge now. I ordered wings from Room Service one day and they were the worst wings I have ever had. They were so small that I could barely hold on to them. My daughter and her finance enjoyed free bowling during their stay ... no longer available. Bowling is now close to $80/hour in a dingy, dirty facility. There is no doubt that this is a beautiful resort, hence our return. There is little or no value for your money here anymore. When my wife and I stay at the Trump in Chicago every year, we have unlimited access to the steam room, sauna, indoor pool at no additional charge. Ridiculous that when paying close to $1000.00/night (more than the Trump) that I can't have a steam or sauna. My daughter and her fiance are returning to this Hotel in April. They are going to be very disappointed compared to their last stay. The best part of our stay was breakfast in the Vermillion Room. Great service and food. Best Cappuccino we have had at a resort. It would take an incredible sale for us to return to this Hotel. No worth it by a long shot.
Beautiful hotel, Excellent staff, stunning location!
Things have changed... the spa treatments were nice, the room was nice. The lounge was nice. But it's obvious there have been cutbacks. Those spa services are too expensive to cut corners. Overall nice, but not what floor 5 used to be.
