Fairmont CAREs Program

As our brand grew globally, we recognized that many of the new markets we were entering faced diverse needs that encompassed not only environmental concerns but also social and community wellbeing considerations. The Fairmont CAREs (Community Assistance and Responsibility to the Environment) initiative was created to represent a robust source of giving that reflects the broader range of projects our properties undertake to ensure their presence is felt within their communities.

CAREs provides financial support in the form of single- and multi-year grants that allow the brand as a whole to respond to a broader range of activities, providing the seed money necessary to stimulate local growth and demonstrate “citizenship” through leadership and involvement in the community.

The Fairmont Southampton: Beyond Rugby
The Fairmont Southampton continues to work closely with Beyond Rugby. Beyond Rugby is an innovative partnership between Bermuda’s Children’s services leader, The Family Centre and the Bermuda Rugby Union. It is intended to engage at risk youth through guidance from nurturing adults, physical fitness, self-discipline and access to academic and emotional support services. Beyond Rugby is the Bermuda based “chapter,” of Beyond Sport a global organization that helps develop and celebrate projects and charities that use sport to create positive change. Over the years, the project has demonstrated an increase in positive attitudes and behaviours in school and the larger community. Increased confidence, team work and ability to seek help were all reported as improved during the 2013 impact report.

Fairmont Mayakoba: Ak Kuxtali
It takes more than a great product to run a successful business. Ak Kuxtali is an organization of local craftspeople that sell their wares to Fairmont Mayakoba for small group amenities. With the support of a $10,000 Fairmont CAREs grant, the organization now has the potential to thrive. The funds provide residents with the necessary training, knowledge, tools and visibility needed to develop their community cooperatives and, ultimately, drive employment via eco-tours and handicrafts. The partnership not only supports local development, but it also encourages the proper use of natural resources while preserving local tradition of the Mayan culture.

Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club: Yanyoni Women Dancers
According to African customs and culture, a strong neighbour always assists a weak one. With this in mind, Colleagues at Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club reached out to their community members, Yanyoni Women Dancers, who perform traditional dances at the hotel but are otherwise unemployed. A $5,000 Fairmont CAREs grant purchased goats and rabbits for the women to help feed their own families and also to breed and sell within the community.

Fairmont Beijing: The Special Commune
To combat the low employment rate of the estimated 19 million youth in China with intellectual disabilities, Colleagues at Fairmont Beijing have partnered with the Special Commune, a training facility where intellectually challenged young people can live while they develop social and job skills. With a $10,000 grant from Fairmont CAREs, on behalf of Fairmont Beijing, the facility purchased equipment that will help train these youth in kitchen skills and gardening. By harvesting and selling their own organic fruits and vegetables (some of which are served at Fairmont Beijing), students will also help the Special Commune reach its objective of becoming financially self-sufficient by 2014.
