FAIRMONT HOTELS & RESORTS - A RECOGNIZED LEADER IN SUSTAINABLE TOURISM
In 1884, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts was founded on an enduring connection to the land and communities where we do business. Remaining true to this principal, the company took a proactive approach in 1990 with the launch of its industry-leading Green Partnership program, a comprehensive approach to reducing its impact on the environment. Unheard of at the time, the pioneering program consisted of an early guidebook on sustainable best practices in the lodging industry, and established a commitment to minimizing its hotels’ impact on the planet as a key component of its operating philosophy.
From this promise, Fairmont’s Green Partnership program grew to focus on improvements in the areas of waste management, energy and water conservation, and innovative community outreach programs involving local groups and partnerships – a path Fairmont continues upon to this day.
The Green Partnership allows Fairmont to meet and exceed guest expectations of operational sustainability and responsible tourism, because the environment isn't just something that's 'out there' - it's where we live, work and play each day.
The Fairmont Empress is no exception. As Vancouver Island eco-friendly resort and a Five Green Key Hotel, our colleagues and leaders are committed to preserving its community for the next generation to enjoy.
Awards and Accolades
The Fairmont Empress was the first hotel in Victoria to earn the prestigious Five Green Key distinguished award from the Hotel Association of Canada, recognizing outstanding contributions to environmental practices.

Leading Change
The Fairmont Empress is proud to align its support to community eco-centric charities and organizations. In 2011, 400,000 honeybees took up residence in the gardens to produce fresh honey. A rooftop garden was added to harvest fresh herbs for cocktails and menus. The hotel's resident marmot, Roger, ensures proceeds are donated to the local island marmot association.
