About St. John's, NF

St. John's is the capital city of Newfoundland, an island often called "The Rock" due to its windswept and craggy appearance. One of the oldest cities in North America and the closest to Europe, the city's early rise to prominence was helped by its sheltered harbor, into which John Cabot sailed on St. John's Day in 1497. In 1583, Sir Humphrey Gilbert claimed the city for the British crown. The British influence is still evident, as is that of the French – they attacked and occupied St. John's several times in the 17th and 18th centuries. Today, St. John's is a quaint but bustling city of just over 100,000 inhabitants, most of whom work in the shipping or fishing industries. Sophisticated shops and restaurants line Water and Duckworth Streets, and George Street is legendary for its lively bars. While St. John's is famous for its important role in international commerce and its storied place in North American history, the city is best known for its friendly, welcoming residents.
