It all began in 2003 as The World's Longest Barbeque, a country-wide response to the sanction of Canadian beef exports by our largest trading partner and the dramatic hardship it imposed on our agricultural community. The World's Longest BBQ was a great success and evolved into 'Food Day Canada', an annual mid-summer celebration held on the Saturday of the August long weekend to share Canada's rich culinary heritage. Fairmont Hotels & Resorts is offering a variety of tasty plates on Saturday, August 3rd.

The Fairmont Waterfront
For the sweet tooth in mind The Fairmont Waterfront captures the chocolate lover's heart. Guests can explore the flavours of Herons West Coast Kitchen with Executive Chef Dana Hauser's three course Table d'Hote Menu($69.00). The Fairmont Waterfront's Food Day Canada celebrations span two weeks starting on August 3rd with items like East Coast lobster and Sloping Hills bacon salad with Golden Ears Jersey Blue cheese, Rabbit River poached organic egg, and Village Farms tomatoes. Continue with crispy skin B.C. salmon with a fennel purée, bean and garden rainbow chard fricassee, and pistou broth.  The meal wraps up with a sweet ending of chocolate & cherries - a chocolate panna cotta with preserved Okanagan cherries and cherry sorbet.

Fairmont Pacific Rim

Fairmont Pacific Rim will be celebrating 'O Canada' in style this Food Day Canada as Executive Chef Darren Brown prepares Canadian inspired dishes at both ORU Cuisine and The Lobby Lounge Raw Bar. 

ORU Cuisine, featuring food of the Pacific Northwest and flavours of the Pacific Rim will highlight a dish spanning from the waters of the West Coast to the Atlantic - pan seared Haida Gwaii halibut, house-made maple roasted bacon, British Columbia fingerling potatoes, maritime lobster hash and North Arm Farms' yellow carrots ($36.00). Set within The Lobby Lounge, the newly enhanced Raw Bar takes centre stage and will feature an appetizer dish of Sable Fish and Steelhead Salmon Tataki Duo with maple and local miso Sable Fish and lighly smoked steelhead salmon, complete with a house-made sake and soy glaze using local purveyor Granville Island Sake ($16.00).

The Fairmont Hotel Vancouver  

Newly appointed Executive Chef Cameron Ballendine is spicing up classics in Griffins Restaurant. The  dining room has recently undergone an extensive menu refresh and Food Day Canada is the ideal event to highlight some of Ballendine's menu favourites. Guests will have a choice of pairing an appetizer with main course. Appetizers include a choice of Salad of Shoots, Sprouts & Leaves with shaved heirloom vegetables, tomato jam, and white balsamic vinaigrette or Tomato Basil Soup served with a grilled smoked cheddar cheese toasty. Entrées include a choice of Apple Wood Smoked Chop of Kurobuta Pork with Cauliflower & white cheddar gratin, mustard crushed potato, apple brandy reduction or British Columbia Salmon with Dungeness crab, brioche bread pudding, fine beans, and a refreshing lemon emulsion. Pairings are available in Griffins Restaurant on August 3rd for $39.00.
