Heritage Railway Package
Rail travel in Canada began in the 1800s, with the development of the transcontinental railway. In 1881, under the instruction of Sir John A. MacDonald, Canada's first Prime Minister, the Canadian Pacific Railway company built tracks across Canada. During the railway build, CPR president William Cornelius Van Horne conceived a series of grand railway hotels. Inspired by the natural beauty of the Canadian Rockies, Van Horne is purported to have remarked: “If we can't export the scenery, we'll import the tourists.”
The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is one of Van Horne’s grand railway hotels. Preeminently situated in the majestic Canadian Rockies, at the edge of Lake Louise, it is itself a national landmark and an icon of Canadian history.
With this Heritage Railway Hotel Package you'll witness the wonder of our natural environs, learn the history of rail hotels and the development of the Canadian Rockies and experience a selection of our local heritage activities.
For more information on the history of The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise visit our mountain resorts website.
Package Includes:
- One night's accommodation in a Fairmont Room
- An activity from our Mountain Heritage Program of your choice per day for two people
- Self guided tour of the Mount Temple Wing lobby gallery (detailing the history of The Chateau, the development of the railway and the Lake Louise area.)
Some of our heritage activities include:
Voyageur Canoe Excursion ~ In summer, paddle into history on our authentic 26' cedar strip and canvas canoe on the emerald waters of Lake Louise. Canoes have been part of experiencing this spectacular lake for over a century. As you journey across the lake your guide and canoe historian will share stories of the canoe from native peoples, early explorers, fur traders and others.
Snowshoe Excursion ~ In Winter, explore the Great Divide. Covered by snow for more than five months, our area is superb for this ancient and efficient mode of travel. After gearing up and a brief explanation of snowshoeing, you and your fully certified guide will venture into the forest to look for signs of creatures that have adapted to the demanding winter conditions. If you are nocturnal by nature you may opt for the moonlight excursion. Journey into the woods on snowshoes and enter a world of stillness and mystery. If the skies are clear, your guide will take the time to point out some of the great constellations overhead; Cassiopeia, the Great Bear and Orion the Hunter. Snowshoes are included.
