About Lake Louise, AB

It's almost impossible, upon first seeing Lake Louise, not to gasp. The beautiful, milky blue lake rests at the foot of Victoria Glacier, which rises majestically behind it, capped by snow and ice year-round. First sighted by Europeans in 1882, the lake has become one of Canada's best-loved and most-visited resorts. The village that grew up around it is reassuringly compact. Set on the lake itself, the Château Lake Louise, built by the Canadian Pacific Railroad, is now the focus of shopping, dining and recreation on the upper slopes of the mountain. Farther below lies the village itself, which is composed mainly of resorts and the small Samson Mall. The entire area offers a host of leisure opportunities, including skiing, hiking, fishing and biking. Moraine Lake is a short distance away and is perfect for a day trip. As with most of the Rockies, the area affords incredible opportunity for sightseeing and photography.

When the Canadian Pacific Railway started promoting western Canada as a tourist destination, they brought in mountaineering guides from Switzerland. Chateau Lake Louise became the headquarters of these "Swiss Guides," who led visitors through rough mountain terrain, rescued stranded climbers, and encouraged skiing as a viable winter sport. In 1922, the Guides built Abbot's Pass Hut between Mt. Victoria and Mt. Lefroy, above Lake Louise. At 2925 meters (9598 feet), the stone structure is the highest building in the Canadian Rockies. It was named a National Historic Site in 1997.
