Nationwide, September 15 & 16
This is one of the most important fiestas of the year in Mexico, and definitely the most patriotic one. The celebration begins with “El Grito” (the shout) when crowds gather around town squares or fiestas on September 15 at 11 p.m. for the “Grito de la Independencia”, which commemorates national hero Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla’s call for independence of September 1810, shouting “Viva Mexico!”. Then a display of fireworks and fiestas take place all around the country. On September 16th, there are civic ceremonies and parades.
