Sightseeing in St. John's

Atlantic Ocean
St. John's is located directly on the east coast. The Atlantic Ocean can be seen from The Fairmont Newfoundland and St. John's Harbor is only a five minute walk away. 

Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist 
The cathedral, which has also been declared a National Historic Site, is said to be the best example of Ecclesiastical Gothic architecture in North America. Designed by Sir Gilbert Scott, the cornerstone was laid in 1849. 
Located on Church Hill

C.A. Pippy Park 
The largest park in St. John's, Pippy Park, offers hiking, cross-country skiing, plentiful Newfoundland sightseeing, picnic areas, a fully equipped campground, and two golf courses. Within the park boundaries is the Memorial University Botanical Gardens at Oxen Pond. The site has been developed to display plants suitable to the local climate. Nature trails and guided walks are offered from May to October.

Cape Spear National Historic Park 
The most easterly point in North America, Cape Spear was used by U.S. troops to observe German submarine activity during World War II.

Marine Drive 
This scenic drive begins approximately 3.6 miles from The Fairmont Newfoundland through small traditional communities on the outskirts of St. John's - the best way to experience stunning ocean scenery. 

Old Garrison Church (Anglican) 
This church opened in 1826 and was to be the chapel for the Garrison at nearby Fort William. Its interior decor features the Hanoverian Coat of Arms, which was the Royal Coat of Arms when it was constructed. 

O'Brien's Whale & Bird Tours 
A family operated business, the O'Brien's were raised on the ocean and they, along with their staff, will give you your money's worth as you sail out to see the largest puffin colony in North America. If you're lucky and it is the right season, you may get to see humpback whales or gigantic icebergs.

Signal Hill Historic Park 
The site from where Marconi received the first wireless transatlantic signal in 1901, ushering-in the modern era of telecommunications.
Signal Hill is located just 0.62 miles from the hotel.

St. John's Harbor
To get a real sense of St. John's, a walk along the waterfront is a must. The harbor, located in historic downtown, has provided shelter to explorers, merchants, soldiers, pirates and mariners of all kinds over the last 500 years. Historic buildings, coves, plagues and parks along the route help depict the history of St. John's since discovery by John Cabot in 1497.

Quidi Vidi Village
A picturesque fishing village located within St. John's, featuring craft shops and traditional pubs. While wandering through the narrow winding roads you can visit Mallard Cottage or you can walk the Quidi Vidi Rennies River Trail.

Johnson GEO CENTRE 
A geological museum, located on Signal Hill, telling the story of our province as Earth's Geological Showcase.  The Center is built in a natural rock basin with only a small part of the building above ground.  85% of the building's 2,970 square meters of floor space is underground.  Very few places on the planet offer a geological record that allow visitors to actually see the characteristics of natural exposed rock that date back 550 million years ago.  Johnson GEO Centre is located on Signal Hill, just a short work from The Fairmont Newfoundland.  For additional information you can also e-mail the centre directly. 

The Rooms
This new center will bring together three important provincial institutions under one roof and present to the world Newfoundland and Labrador's collections and exhibitions of historical artifacts, natural history, archival records, and contemporary visual art.  The Provincial Museum, The Provincial Archives, and the Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador will now be housed in a modern, world class facility, The Rooms.

Confederation Building 
Tours of the House of Assembly are free.  When the House is not in Session tours are available Monday to Friday (excluding Statutory Holidays) at 9:00 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 2:00 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. 

The Confederation Building is located approximately two miles from The Fairmont Newfoundland.

Railway Coastal Museum 
The museum is housed in the former Newfoundland Railway Station, which first opened its doors in June 1903.  This magnificent heritage building exhibits the 100 year history of the Newfoundland Railway and Coastal Boat services.
