Stunning sunsets, sandy beaches, and a harbor that's home to thousands of stunning yachts – these are the daily sights at Newport Beach. Located in Orange County, this beach town is both ritzy and relaxing. Its harbor features several small islands and is home to attractions like the Newport Pier, Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve and a handful of museums. Popular pastimes include surfing, playing volleyball and taking romantic walks along the peninsula's shoreline. The seaside community sits on California's famed Pacific Coast Highway (Route 1) and has long been a playground for the well-to-do. One local Victorian structure, Balboa Pavilion, was built in 1904 and hosted many renowned Big Band dances during the 1940s. The pavilion is now the boarding site for several cruise boats and is still a fun destination thanks to its many amusement rides and arcade games.

It may surprise you to learn that Newport Beach was once a dukedom – in a manner of speaking. Legendary actor John Wayne, whose nickname was "The Duke," relocated from Beverly Hills to Newport Beach's Bayside Drive in 1966 and lived there until his death in 1979. Legend has it that the Oscar-winning actor "discovered" Newport Beach's beauty during his college days at Southern Cal.
