The Orchid Beachboys
Decades ago, visitors to the islands were intrigued by the aloha, charm and warm hospitality of the Waikiki Beachboys. Their cultural knowledge, ocean skills and storytelling talents were legendary. This tradition -- and the spirit of old Hawaii -- thrives at The Fairmont Orchid, Hawaii through the Orchid Beachboys program.
The Beach Shack on the lagoon, complete with thatched roof, is headquarters for the Beachboys facing the sugar-white sand beach. Stop by to purchase an Activity Pass, sign up for daily activities, find the perfect beach toy, learn about ocean conditions, or reserve a private beach cabana.
In addition to the wealth of activities included with the Activity Passes, the Orchid Beachboys offer the following ocean activities on request, by appointment only for a fee of $65 for hotel guests, $85 non-hotel guests.
Kayak Adventure
Embark on a two-hour kayaking/snorkeling adventure right off the hotel's white sand beach. Your guide will lead you out into pristine Pauoa Bay where you'll paddle along the beautiful Mauna Lani Resort shoreline. Terrific snorkel spots abound and you'll marvel at underwater arches, Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu), eagle rays, tropical reef fish and other marine life of the coral reef ecosystem. Learn about the ancient Hawaiians who called this shoreline home, and the legends they handed down through the generations.
Shoreline Fishing Excursion
Spend the morning learning and practicing local and Hawaiian shoreline fishing techniques from a double-hulled canoe in the calm, near shore waters along Mauna Lani Resort. Your Beachboy guide will fill you in on the favorite fish of Hawaiian royalty, why locals won't allow bananas aboard a fishing boat, the Hawaiian kapu system which protected certain fish during breeding seasons, and other interesting cultural anecdotes. A great activity for father/son bonding, or anyone who loves to fish. Two hours.
Surf Lessons
Surf's up! Our Orchid Beachboys are master surfers and love to introduce novices to the sheer pleasure of standing up on a board for the first time. Experienced surfers can also benefit from these local masters to improve their skills. There are two great surf spots in front of the hotel, which are rarely crowded. Discover a truly Hawaiian sport while learning water safety tips and rules of etiquette to keep you safe in the waves.
Progressive Outrigger Canoe Paddling
Outrigger canoe paddling is Hawaii's #1 competitive sport and it provides a terrific upper body and cardiovascular workout. Many of our Orchid Beachboys are outrigger canoe paddling champions and coaches who are happy to help you excel at their favorite pastime. Learn the techniques that will help you master this fun, invigorating ocean activity.
THE TENNIS PAVILLION - If tennis is your game, or you've always wanted to give it a swing, then The Fairmont Orchid is a must as your vacation destination. Recognized by Tennis Magazine in October 2006 among the "Top 50 Greatest US Tennis Resorts," the Tennis Pavilion offers tennis programs and facilities for all skill levels.

Pro shop with a sporty selection of tennis apparel and equipment, racquet stringing, match arrangements, instructional theme clinics, racquet and ball machine rentals, and lessons.

Hours of Operation:
From 7:30 am to 5:00 pm daily with evening hours available with advance reservation until 10:00 pm. Courts reserved for 1 hour (singles) and 1.5 hours (doubles). If space is available, longer play is allowed.
Rates:
$15 per person, per day
Private lessons are available for $50 USD for half an hour, or $90 USD an hour. You can also book semi-private lessons for an extra $5. Ball machines are available for $25 USD/hour or $15 USD for half an hour.
Dress Code:
Tennis shoes and appropriate attire is required. Running shoes are not allowed.

SWIMMING POOL
Our free-form, 10,000-square-foot swimming pool is perfect for a refreshing dip, 24 hours a day! Located in the middle of the resort right on the ocean, The Fairmont Orchid's pool is surrounded by beautiful tropical landscaping, offers poolside lunches and libations from the Ocean Bar, and is near Brown's Deli. Pool servers are happy to take your refreshment order from anywhere on the pool deck. Two nearby lava rock whirlpools are also open 24 hours a day, and a kid's pool complete with a sandy bottom provides a safe splash for children under adult supervision.
Enjoy sunbathing from any of our comfortable lounges, and make a point to gaze at the endless stars and heavenly bodies after sunset: the Kohala Coast offers some of the world's best stargazing opportunities. A Ping Pong table, recreation desk, magazines and plenty of Hawaiian sunshine. Daily aqua fitness classes are offered through the optional purchase of the "Fun & Sun" Activity Pass listed at the top of the page.
