Aspiring Arabic Architecture
Dubai Thursday, January 01, 2015
Located on the iconic Palm Jumeirah, the world’s largest man-made island shaped in the form of a palm tree, Fairmont The Palm offers a unique destination in the heart of the prestigious landmark, infused with Arabic design touches set against a contemporary architecture.
In close proximity to Dubai International Airport, the resort is ideally located next to key business districts, including Dubai Media City, Dubai Internet City and Dubai Knowledge Village as well as some of the city’s major landmarks such as the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, and Dubai Mall, the largest mall in the world, offering some of the region’s best shopping experience.
Flanked by two residential towers and adjacent to a soon-to-be debuted shopping boulevard, filled with restaurants, upscale boutiques and luxury shops called the Golden Mile, Fairmont The Palm is centrally situated for guests seeking short distance leisure activities, dining and exploration in and around the neighbourhood. The resort is also minutes away from the Dubai Marina, lauded for its café style restaurants and al fresco dining alongside the Jumeirah Walk and public beach.
Clive Ford, Chief Engineer from DSA Architects International, was charged with the task of developing a landmark destination on the Palm Jumeirah that would match the prestige and the prominence of the archipelago. This was achieved through a contemporary design brushed with Arabic influences, incorporating the natural elements of sun, sea and sand, given the colour palate of beige, ecru, tan and light hues and natural building materials of granite and marble.
Inspired by traditional Arabic architecture, authentic design elements are incorporated throughout the property, including mashrabiya screens (projecting oriel windows enclosed with carved wood) described in legends as mystical symbols of Arabia. Over 100 mashrabiya motifs are reflected throughout the resort. Rich, elaborate fabrics have also been used decoratively throughout the resort, lavishly covering over 23,680 linear metres.
The journey begins at the moment of arrival in the lobby, as guests experience unfettered views of the Arabian Gulf through a ceiling high window. The contrast of the desert oasis against the aquamarine of the sea creates a harmonious atmosphere of tranquility and opulence.
All restaurants offer guests a unique dining experience in exquisite settings. BāRestaurant & Lounge, apan Chinese restaurant, taking its name from the Chinese number 8, is considered to be lucky in East Asian lore and mythology and covers two stories, comprising of a lounge and a signature restaurant. Cloud shaped designs, which represent luck, are repeated in a pattern across the ceiling, reflecting the well known Chinese cultural symbol for never ending fortune. The Cigar Room offers elegantly chic surroundings highlighted by dark and rich leather furnishings, mahogany lined flooring, a flame lit back wall and walk-in humidor. Frevo, a Brazilian Churrascaria experience, is ideally suited for large gatherings and an outdoor terrace offers a spacious area for celebrations, while Seagrill on 25° Restaurant & Lounge embraces a prime position overlooking the Arabian sea for relaxing with shisha. The MashrabiyaLounge, set against the backdrop of contemporary arabesque design, features extensive al fresco terraces for enjoying afull range of delectable offerings, including an award winning Afternoon Tea program. Flow Kitchen, an international restaurant serving family style cuisine from the Middle East, India, the Mediterranean and Asia, offers a private dining area for up to 30 guests and an outdoor terrace to take in the sea views. The restaurant also features a Dubai first – BreakSlow, the leisurely breakfast brunch - available every Friday from 11am – 3:00pm.
All dining facilities boast a range of spectacular views, from the Arabian Sea to the resort gardens covering over 13,000 square metres, as well as four outdoor swimming pools and a private beach, spanning a length of 450 metres.
Many of the guestrooms and suites also offer sweeping sea views, and are outfitted with a spacious balcony, varying in size from 8 to 13 square metres, perfect for entertaining small intimate gatherings or simply taking in the views. With a colour palette inspired by nature, the interior décor incorporates the shimmering crystal waters of the sea, reflecting the beauty of the Arabian Sea sunrise and sunset in the carpets and soft furnishings. Arabic design elements feature throughout, from the light fixtures to the intricate designs inlayed in the wooden headboards. Many of the guest rooms can be connected for added exclusivity, with an additional exterior door and foyer area.
