Alcatraz: This always-popular attraction offers a close-up look at the site of the first lighthouse and US built fort on the West Coast, the infamous federal penitentiary long off-limits to the public which was immortalized in the film "The Rock". Rich in history, there is also a natural side to The Rock-gardens, tide pools, bird colonies and bay views which are beyond comparison. TIP: Booking advanced tickets is strongly recommended.
Exploratorium: San Francisco’s new Exploratorium, located along the waterfront, is a hands-on museum of science, art and human perception.
California Academy of Sciences: A planetarium, aquarium, and natural history museum all under a Living Roof in Golden Gate Park.
Museums: San Francisco’s family-oriented museums are free at least one day each month and in many cases, are complimentary for children 12 and under. The de Young Fine Arts Museum features kid-friendly tours and free Saturday “Doing and Viewing Art” classes for children 4 through 12. The Asian Art Museum has created special Sunday family programming. The free admission on the first Sunday of each month features storytelling and family oriented yoga sessions. In addition the museum often presents films and performances related to the cultural background of the artworks on view.
Golden Gate Park: At over 1,000 acres, Golden Gate Park is one of the Top 5 most visited parks in the United States and features a wide array of family friendly activities including museums (California Academy of Science and the de Young Fine Arts Museum), Japanese Tea Garden, Conservatory of Flowers, two lakes, a carousel, multiple playgrounds and much more.
San Francisco Zoo: Located in the southwestern corner of San Francisco and bordering the Pacific Ocean is the world-famous 100-acre San Francisco Zoo. Home to 693 individual animals representing 197 species, this zoo is also known as the birthplace of Koko the Gorilla. The zoo houses some of the world’s rarest animals and is easily accessible by the “L” line street cars on Market Street.
Bicycle Rental: With San Francisco’s 44 hills, you wouldn’t expect it to be one of the most bike-friendly cities in America. There are numerous bicycle rental agencies conveniently available, offering single and multi-day rentals allowing families to explore. Some of the more popular rides include from Fisherman’s Wharf and across the Golden Gate Bridge and riding through the 1,000 acre Golden Gate Park to Ocean Beach.
Fairmont San Francisco Scavenger Hunt: Ask about our child-centric scavenger hunt at check-in. Geared towards educating children about Fairmont San Francisco as a historical and iconic hotel. Upon completion of the scavenger hunt, children receive a Fairmont Honey Bee plush toy.
Honeybees & Herb Garden: In partnership with Marshall’s Farm, Fairmont San Francisco has installed honey beehives as well as a pollinator bee hotel on the property’s rooftop culinary garden in order to help support the bee population, which has decreased in number by 90 percent since the 1980s.
Afternoon Tea: Afternoon Tea has been a tradition for San Franciscans and guests of the hotel since the opening of the hotel in 1907.

At all Fairmont hotels, kids aged five and under eat free off the children’s menu while kids aged six to eleven eat for half price off the regular menu. The Lifestyle Cuisine offers a healthy twist on the usual kid-friendly favorites such as chicken strips, pizza, spaghetti with meatballs and even chocolate mousse. Chefs are in the process of swapping out refined flour for whole wheat, incorporating fruits and vegetables into recipes to help meet the recommended daily fiber allowance, and employing alternative cooking methods to help ensure healthier choices are made available to young diners.
