SPES Adopt A Heron Nest Program
For the grand re-opening of the newly renovated Fairmont Gold floor, a 48-room hotel with a boutique feel, the dedicated Gold Team has adopted a family of great blue herons and their nest through the kitty-corner Stanley Park Ecology Society (SPES). This seasonal initiative supports efforts to learn more about the amazing birds and to protect their homes within Stanley Park.
In recent years, great blue herons have nested in unprecedented numbers in Stanley Park, and visitors can observe around 117 nests in 25 trees. The Stanley Park Ecology Society’s staff and volunteers have been monitoring these threatened birds to track their success in raising chicks and to provide information about them to city officials, local residents and visitors.
Although the Stanley Park heronry is thriving, great blue herons are a Species at Risk. Nearly 80% of all great blue herons in BC are found in and around the Fraser River Delta. This means the productivity of this one heronry has implications for the viability of the subspecies as a whole. This vulnerable species needs protection, understanding, and community support if it is to survive the increasing urban development of the region.
The Fairmont Gold team want to provide a way for visiting guests to contribute to Vancouver’s sustainability mission. They love that the neighbouring SPES Adopt a Nest program grants an opportunity to connect with those eco-conscious travellers, and share information about our passion of performing sustainable business through innovative projects.
Fairmont Gold guests are able to learn more about the initiative, take out the complimentary hotel bicycles, add a packed picnic, complimentary guide map and visit the feathered family, and even receive monthly email updates on the happenings of the herons family throughout the season.
