Austin, TX Monday, December 05, 2016

AUSTIN, December 5, 2016 – Austin joins the ranks of major citywide event destinations with the construction of The Red River Canopy Walk. The $6 million elevated passage will be the only pedestrian bridge leading directly from the Austin Convention Center to a hotel. The union between Fairmont Austin and the Center dramatically enhances the city’s ability to attract high profile citywide meetings and events.
“Without Fairmont Austin and its connectivity to the Austin Convention Center, we simply would have never considered Austin a viable destination for our conference,” said Amy Phillips, CMP, Senior Director, Meetings and Events for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. “The synergy of these two facilities allows us to host our 3,000 delegate event in Austin, while the Central Business District location enables us to utilize multiple area hotels for our attendees.”
Tom Voss, Managing Director of Fairmont Austin said, “The Red River Canopy Walk provides an uncomplicated convention experience which will attract events that may have overlooked Austin in the past. Fairmont Austin adds an element of style, service and sophistication that will enhance the Austin brand.”
The 33-foot-tall passage allows hotel guests and the public to experience a unique aerial perspective of the lush greenery of Waller Creek and Palm Park as they travel from the new 37-story luxury hotel to the Austin Convention Center. Conceptual drawings of the connection illustrate the graceful, curving design envisioned by New York-based Thomas Phifer and Partners, who with Michael Van Valkenburgh & Associates won the Waller Creek Conservancy’s international design competition.
With nearly 140,000 square feet of total meeting space, Fairmont Austin offers a grand setting for events up to 3,000 guests. Located on the 3rd floor with striking skyline views, the Congressional Ballroom features 26,000 square feet of unobstructed meeting space; the Manchester Ballroom features an expansive 31,100 square feet with a pre-function area of 12,900 square feet; 23 executive meeting rooms span in size from 265 to 1350 square feet for a total of 18,000 square feet; and two additional ballrooms especially designed for weddings and social events feature a built-in stage. The 7th floor outdoor event space at 13,500 square feet, provides an al fresco venue for guests.
The Red River Canopy Walk includes a simplified pathway, via a stairway and accessible ramp, to Palm Park with its five miles of new hike and bike trails. This serene urban park is set within an exciting downtown vibe and a short stroll to Lady Bird Lake. The airy design of the walkway reinforces Waller Creek’s vision of renewing urban parks, creating public open space and nourishing authentic and uplifting experiences that reflect Austin’s diversity and dynamic spirit.
Built by the hotel’s developer, Manchester Texas Financial Group, The Red River Canopy Walk will be completed early 2018. Fairmont Austin, with its destination-esque spa, six dining venues, resort-style pool, four ballrooms, 23 executive meeting rooms and 7th floor outdoor pool terrace and event space, will open late this fall. Fairmont Austin is located at 101 Red River Street in Austin and meetings and event bookings can be arranged by contacting the sales department at 512-580-0184.
