Discover
Reminiscent of the hot springs that beckoned travellers over 100 years ago, the pulsating waterfalls and the mineral pool in the heart of the Banff spa soothe troubled spirits.
The Beginning
William Cornelius Van Horne had a vision to bring the beauty of the Canadian Rocky Mountains to the rest of the world. He commissioned blueprints for an impressive hotel to be built at the convergence of the Bow and Spray River, in what is now known as Canada's first National Park. Construction began in 1887 and the hotel publically opened on June 1, 1888.
By the start of the twentieth century, the Banff Springs luxury Hotel had developed into one of the top three mountain getaways in North America. Disaster struck in 1926 when the original wooden hotel burnt down. It was rebuilt larger and in its present appearance commencing in 1928.
Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression
Throughout the 1920s and 30s, the hotel was able to combine day-to-day hotel life with the concept of luxurious hotel living. The depression played a part in the 'golden era' as well.
Through the 1940s to 60s, the hotel struggled to reclaim the success it had before the war. The hotel went through a significant change, adapting to the economics of the time. Transportation, convenience and availability to monetary funds jointly changed the whole perspective of the hotel.
"Since we can't export the scenery, we'll have to import the tourists."
William Cornelius Van Horne
By the 70s, the hotel reached a pivotal point. For the first time, Banff Springs remained open for the winter season, becoming a year-round resort destination. The 80s then brought expansion and renovation back to the hotel.

Loved being in the heart of the Canadian Rockies! This was an excellent location for the conference I attended. Our room was cozy and well stocked. I understand this is tough to work around in an older building, however I found the washroom too small to maneuver in. No counter space. Meeting rooms were very comfortable. Loved the bowling alley option!
Outstanding service.
When there were issues with our room the front staff and manager were able to rectify the problem by not only upgrading our room but also giving us a gift certificate to use anywhere in the hotel . This gesture was above and beyond our expectation !
Lovely staff, beautiful location
When people enjoy what they do, it shows! The staff at the Banff Springs are so attentive to every detail in every way. Just a fabulous stay in the Rockies!
There was a spot of blood on the sheets (have a photo) but was too late to call housekeeping. We got “upgraded” to a view room (because we are Platinum ALL loyalty members) and the room was horrible. Small window hidden behind a wall, ceiling had damage. Dark and dingy. We usually get a cheese board in our room, got a bag of 3 cookies. Just not the experience we usually get at the Springs. Will consider a different hotel next time. Spa and pool were wonderful which is what we went for.

The Fairmont Banff Springs hotel is a gorgeous facility with an amazing backdrop, couldn't ask for anything more. Only one issue, the last night we didn't get an ounce of sleep as I mentioned to the concierge, booming music all night, not fair. On top of that, the concierge phoned back to say the music had stopped? again interrupted for no reason, I figured my ears would tell me when the music stopped didn't need a loud call to advise on this. Other than that, fantastic place. Maybe my next stay will be more pleasurable and relaxing. Thanks, David
