Reminiscent of the hot springs that beckoned travellers over 100 years ago, the pulsating waterfalls and the mineral pool in the heart of the Banff spa soothe troubled spirits.
1888
The Beginning
William Cornelius Van Horne had a vision to bring the beauty of the Canadian Rocky Mountains to the rest of the world. He commissioned blueprints for an impressive hotel to be built at the convergence of the Bow and Spray River, in what is now known as Canada's first National Park. Construction began in 1887 and the hotel publically opened on June 1, 1888.
1900s The 20th Century
By the start of the twentieth century, the Banff Springs luxury Hotel had developed into one of the top three mountain getaways in North America. Disaster struck in 1926 when the original wooden hotel burnt down. It was rebuilt larger and in its present appearance commencing in 1928.
1940s Adapting to a New Way of Life
Through the 1940s to 60s, the hotel struggled to reclaim the success it had before the war. The hotel went through a significant change, adapting to the economics of the time. Transportation, convenience and availability to monetary funds jointly changed the whole perspective of the hotel.
"Since we can't export the scenery, we'll have to import the tourists."
William Cornelius Van Horne
By the 70s, the hotel reached a pivotal point. For the first time, Banff Springs remained open for the winter season, becoming a year-round resort destination. The 80s then brought expansion and renovation back to the hotel.

Like living inside an enchanted story book
Every day we stayed, we had to come to reception to ask about a new charge that had been put on our card. Not only was this frustrating and an interference on our holiday time, it was unprofessional on the hotel's part. It left us with the impression that either the hotel was strapped for cash or had very low trust in its guests. Whilst the hotel, facilities, staff and activities were great, the policy for the charging of guests was not communicated. As an Accor member who stayed at 6 hotels over the course of our stay, it was the Fairmont Banff Springs that was the most unprofessional in this respect.

over all nice
Fantastic historic hotel. We had a junior suite (209) which was spacious and had a great view of the mountains. The bathroom layout is a bit tight. I would recommend the mirror run across the entire wall as when the door is open (ex when using the electrical socket to dry hair) it blocks the mirror. Also there is very little space for toiletries. The space that is there perilously overhangs the toilet. I'm just suggesting, overall it was a great room. We loved the Rundle Bar and the outdoor pool!
The staff in the front desk was very nice. The room was newly renovated and comfortable.
Amazing stay. 👏
First time in Banff. Guest service staff were extremely helpful & courteous.
