Lake of Little Fishes
1890 A Simple Beginning
''A hotel for outdoor adventurer and alpinist,'' was the vision Cornelius Van Horne, general manager of the Canadian Pacific Railway, had in mind for the one-story log cabin constructed on the shore of Lake Louise in 1890. It contained a central area that served as dining room, office, bar and gathering place, a kitchen and two small bedrooms, fronted by large windows facing the lake and a verandah. The original Chalet Lake Louise hosted visitors from different dining stations along the railway line as well as day visitors from its elegant sister, the Banff Springs Hotel. While only 50 guests registered at the chalet in 1890 by 1912, as the Chalet grew in size so did visitation, eventually accommodating over 50,000 people.
Lake Louise is renowned as the birthplace of Canadian mountaineering. In August 1896, during a small but much publicized expedition to Mount Lefroy, Phillip Abbot fell to his death just feet from the summit, becoming the first man known to have been killed in Canadian mountaineering. His tragic death sent a shockwave through North America's climbing community. It also influenced Canadian Pacific to hire their first two professional Swiss mountain guides to lead guests safely to the summits of their dreams.
Between 1899 and 1954, generations of these Swiss mountaineers taught thousands of visitors and locals to climb and, later, to ski. Canadian Pacific Swiss guides were responsible for over 250 first ascents in these mountains, most of them in the company of hotel guests. From fondues to hikes, the Swiss influence on architecture, cuisine and our guided program of Mountain Heritage Adventures can still be felt at the Chateau today.
1920 Kings & Hollywood Royalty
Right from the start, holidays in Lake Louise have meant mountain climbing, horseback riding and gazing at stars - both natural and human. A top location within western Canada's continuing reputation as ''Hollywood North,'' early movies shot in Lake Louise include 1928 ''Eternal Love'' starring John Barrymore, 1942 ''Springtime in the Rockies'' with Betty Grable and Carmen Miranda and 1944 ''Son of Lassie.'' Literally hundreds of stars have come here for filming or vacationing, including Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Alfred Hitchcock, Marilyn Monroe, Christopher Reeve and Angie Dickinson.
As early as 1912, when the British Prince of Wales (King Edward VIII, who abdicated) included a hike to the Lake Agnes Teahouse as a part of his ''morning exercise'' the Chateau has also welcomed dozens of royals including Prince Rainier of Monaco, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip, Queen Margrethe of Denmark, King Hussein and Queen Noor of Jordan. You never know who you might see on a stroll around the lake...
"If you can't export the scenery, we'll import the tourists."
William Cornelius Van Horne
Swiss and Austrian mountain guides introduced Banff and Lake Louise youth to skiing as early as 1909. The Banff Ski Club was founded in 1917. And by the early 1920s adventurous Albertans and their guests were carving the logging trails and flying over jumps at Tunnel Mountain. Full-scale ski areas at Mount Norquay, Sunshine Village and Lake Louise were all in operation by the 1930s. Although they were conceived as summer-only resorts, the Banff Springs Hotel and Chateau Lake Louise opened for skiers on a trial basis during the peak winter holiday seasons of the 1970s, breathing new life into both luxury hotels. A decade later the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics would showcase Banff National Park's ski resorts to the world. Today, this hotel is one of the highlights of the international ski circuit, hosting the Lake Louise World Cup racers each November, and welcoming eager skiers, snowboarders and winter sport enthusiasts from all over the world.

Our room was not ready on time, but a nice desk clerk worked on it and found us a room

It was incredible and everything we did was amazing. The stay was almost perfect. Truly. Everyone was kind and professional, the location is superb in every single way, concierge and front desk and bell desk were all incredible and quick to help. The food and drinks were good but not great. Menus were very limited. And, I would like to make a comment about pricing. The room rates are simply too high. Let me explain: I had a junior suite and the bathroom and room lighting were quite poor, my suite boasted dated decor in good condition, suite lacked a balcony (such a waste with such a fabulous view), extremely loud swamp cooler taking up a good chunk of our sitting area instead of A/C made it challenging to sleep at night, and the dirty windows...which you look out a million times a day at that incredible view...that's why you are there... all combine to equal a lower price. Location is ALMOST everything...but not quite. I still highly recommend this hotel as the location is stellar and if you have it in your budget, that view is quite memorable. Note too that the shuttle to Moraine Lake cost $10, which at these prices, seemed like robbery and canoeing was $145/hr, though we received a lovely free ride, for which we are most grateful. The hikes from there were wonderful and I highly recommend asking the bell desk and concierge for assistance in choosing your activities; they were all great. But, if you plan to park at your daily excursions and drive your own car, do your research as many parking lots are full by 430am, making shuttling (or an organized tour/horseback ride/bike trip) the absolute superior option. I recognize everything must come from fr away to make its way up the mountain, but I do feel the prices were too high.
Overall, the location is outstanding! The staff is very friendly and tries to be attentive to requests. Where the hotel falls short, drastically, is in food service. It was so disappointing that we went over to The Post Hotel to have delicious food experiences. Also disappointing that Alpine Social was only open at 5pm. A better job should be done in being sure hotel guests are a priority.
Beautiful location
Comfortable and clean room except washroom a bit small. Gold service was excellent. Gold lounge food very good. Best of all is the hotel location.
we have never been to this hotel, while we have stayed at several other fairmont properties. I found the chateau lake louise property to be extremely dated, in the common areas and in the rooms. I felt like I stepped back into the 60's or 70's. I felt the lighting was insufficient. the lobby area was too dark, the rugs were worn and looked like they needed replacing. Several areas needed extra cleaning, and fresh paint. the restaurant choices were insufficient and the menu's needed an overhaul. While we had several issues, the staff and management took care of our concerns to our satisfaction. Most of the staff were friendly ,courteous and accommodating with one exception, and that was properly address by that person's supervisor.
The room was like an oven. Your building a pool, adding a restaurant but can’t air condition the rooms! To get coffee in the morning you stand in line for half an hour. Time to refocus your efforts!
Our first room reeked of cigarettes. We walked in and immediately turned around to return to the front desk to ask to change rooms. Nick at the front desk seemed skeptical of this, as if we weren’t telling the truth! He assured us that they use a neutralizer if rooms smell like smoke. Nope, Nick. The room smelled like the previous guest chain smoked in there! Nick finds us another room and when we get to that one, it’s not only half the size of the original room, but it’s about 35 degrees C inside. We were in the middle of a heat wave and it was never mentioned that the room doesn’t have air conditioning! I called down to Nick again and he tells me the room has no air conditioning and unfortunately the hotel doesn’t have any more portable a/c units to deliver to the room, they’re all being used. Excuse me? How can you expect a guest to stay in a room that’s over 30 degrees on a higher floor and the sun doesn’t even set until 10 pm! So Nick finds us a third room alternative that is a higher tier room but now instead of the lake view we paid for, we’re looking out over buildings and rooftops and HVAC systems. But the air conditioning was an absolute necessity, especially since we were traveling with our elderly dog. So we moved rooms again. Nick gave us a couple of drink tickets and when I went to pick them up at the front desk, i overheard another couple telling who I assume was the general manager about their disappointing experience. So I decided to tell her about mine. I explained what happened and rather than listen to me or look at me, she just started doing something on the computer and then said to me “what do you want to make this better. What are you looking for?” As if my only reason for sharing my experience was to get something in return? A hotel of this caliber charging these rates should have impeccable service, amenities, and facilities. She ended up refunding 40% of my $1500 bill (for one night!) back to us. Did it take some of the sting out of the overall trip? Sure. But we still paid $900 for one night and had a terrible experience. We have travels planned to Victoria soon and I so hoped to stay in the Fairmont there, but after this experience I can’t imagine wanting to spend this kind of money on a room at any fairmont property again. Especially if Lake Louise is considered one of the legacy properties! I haven’t had a chance to write a review yet but plan to. You’re literally robbing people to charge what you charge there. I’ve had better experiences at roadside motels for $100!
