Lake of Little Fishes
1890 A Simple Beginning
''A hotel for outdoor adventurer and alpinist,'' was the vision Cornelius Van Horne, general manager of the Canadian Pacific Railway, had in mind for the one-story log cabin constructed on the shore of Lake Louise in 1890. It contained a central area that served as dining room, office, bar and gathering place, a kitchen and two small bedrooms, fronted by large windows facing the lake and a verandah. The original Chalet Lake Louise hosted visitors from different dining stations along the railway line as well as day visitors from its elegant sister, the Banff Springs Hotel. While only 50 guests registered at the chalet in 1890 by 1912, as the Chalet grew in size so did visitation, eventually accommodating over 50,000 people.
Lake Louise is renowned as the birthplace of Canadian mountaineering. In August 1896, during a small but much publicized expedition to Mount Lefroy, Phillip Abbot fell to his death just feet from the summit, becoming the first man known to have been killed in Canadian mountaineering. His tragic death sent a shockwave through North America's climbing community. It also influenced Canadian Pacific to hire their first two professional Swiss mountain guides to lead guests safely to the summits of their dreams.
Between 1899 and 1954, generations of these Swiss mountaineers taught thousands of visitors and locals to climb and, later, to ski. Canadian Pacific Swiss guides were responsible for over 250 first ascents in these mountains, most of them in the company of hotel guests. From fondues to hikes, the Swiss influence on architecture, cuisine and our guided program of Mountain Heritage Adventures can still be felt at the Chateau today.
1920 Kings & Hollywood Royalty
Right from the start, holidays in Lake Louise have meant mountain climbing, horseback riding and gazing at stars - both natural and human. A top location within western Canada's continuing reputation as ''Hollywood North,'' early movies shot in Lake Louise include 1928 ''Eternal Love'' starring John Barrymore, 1942 ''Springtime in the Rockies'' with Betty Grable and Carmen Miranda and 1944 ''Son of Lassie.'' Literally hundreds of stars have come here for filming or vacationing, including Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Alfred Hitchcock, Marilyn Monroe, Christopher Reeve and Angie Dickinson.
As early as 1912, when the British Prince of Wales (King Edward VIII, who abdicated) included a hike to the Lake Agnes Teahouse as a part of his ''morning exercise'' the Chateau has also welcomed dozens of royals including Prince Rainier of Monaco, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip, Queen Margrethe of Denmark, King Hussein and Queen Noor of Jordan. You never know who you might see on a stroll around the lake...
"If you can't export the scenery, we'll import the tourists."
William Cornelius Van Horne
Swiss and Austrian mountain guides introduced Banff and Lake Louise youth to skiing as early as 1909. The Banff Ski Club was founded in 1917. And by the early 1920s adventurous Albertans and their guests were carving the logging trails and flying over jumps at Tunnel Mountain. Full-scale ski areas at Mount Norquay, Sunshine Village and Lake Louise were all in operation by the 1930s. Although they were conceived as summer-only resorts, the Banff Springs Hotel and Chateau Lake Louise opened for skiers on a trial basis during the peak winter holiday seasons of the 1970s, breathing new life into both luxury hotels. A decade later the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics would showcase Banff National Park's ski resorts to the world. Today, this hotel is one of the highlights of the international ski circuit, hosting the Lake Louise World Cup racers each November, and welcoming eager skiers, snowboarders and winter sport enthusiasts from all over the world.

Great - was easy to get to, and had lots of options for people to enjoy the area without it getting too crowded.
It was a privilege to stay in such an iconic location and we splurged for a room with a view of Lake Louis. Loved the guided walk to Johnston Canyon and our self guided walk across Lake Louis. It was an easy drive to ski Lake Louis from the hotel. Good thing since shuttle service was infrequent. The lunches in the cafe behind the main lobby were very pleasant. The dinners at Walliser Stube were excellent. A dinner at Louiza and Alpine Social were also good. Staff in general were very accommodating. The detractors: 1. self parking is still pricey and the garage isn't even underground as with most cold weather resorts. 2. We had to ask for a refrigerator to safeguard some medications. We were told that units inside the rooms were coolers not refrigerators. It exemplifies the overall quality of the rooms. They are neither 'modern luxury' nor 'old world' nostalgia. Everything about the room is just ' an average older hotel' in a big city. It leads me to the rating of 'overpriced to repeat but worth it once.' 3. Check in was just ok. I inquired about an early check in between 12-12:30. Turns out we actually arrived closer to 3pm. I received 2 different instructions on how to retrieve our luggage. The Bell staff said I would have to respond to the text message that we had a room # with the baggage claim #. The front desk said they already had the claim # and would associate the luggage to the room. Turned out the latter was correct. The only thing we could do was have a late lunch waiting on the room. Because we didn't have a room # we could not use the guest wifi. It is the little things like this that I would expect of a lesser priced hotel not the Fairmont Lake Louise. 4. I called a day later post departure to inquire about a blanket that I may have left behind. I was told Lost and Found would contact me. No one did.
Our stay at the hotel and Lake Louise was fantastic. The iconic view of the mountains and lake amazed us the entire trip. The staff at every level served with professionalism. They made us feel welcomed and comfortable. Excellent!
Wonderful view, room, service, ambience, food. We used the library nightly to play scrabble and have tea/coffee with our pup. Very dog friendly. Easy access to mountain. Loved Tea Time. Super lovely experience.
Accommodations, Dining and Service were excellent.

Loved our 8 night stay on the 7th GOLD floor! Everyone was wonderful. My only critique is that the nightlife was very quiet…maybe bring in a local band on weekends? Or at least a DJ?? My wife, Darcy, and I thoroughly loved Lake Louise and the Fairmont. we will be back for sure!
I recently stayed for a night and had a fantastic stay. Every colleague I interacted with were so friendly and welcoming. I dined at Louiza for breakfast and the decor looked fantastic and the service from the host stand through to my server were so friendly. Special thanks as well to Jenny at the Front Desk who helped me check-in and printed some paperwork I needed for the following day.
2 night stay for a bit of work and vacation. Profited from the outdoor trails for some running and the nice views from the lounge for working and eating.
We enjoyed and took advantage of as many of the programs and activities as possible, from skating on the lake to Bavaria curling to hiking across the lake to the glacial falls, skiing then relaxing in the library. We filled the days with activities and it was well worth the visit.
