Speakeasies and Secret Bars

< back

Mandalay Whikys and Cigars

Through the door of an old closet inside a casual village pub isn't where you would expect to find a secret Kipling-inspired den. Mandalay is plush, ornately opulent, and unabashedly old-world Oriental, complete with an extensive cigar and whisky selection.

Exit Bar
Comprising of nothing more than one narrow room, Exit Bar is the perfect spot for clandestine meetings, with its dark wood furniture, low lighting, and unobtrusive mood music. The food menu is concise but delightful, placing the rightful attention on the cocktails. The De Rigeur, a (small) crowd favorite, is a refreshing mix of bourbon, grapefruit and honey. Follow the Exit sign.

Blind Pig
Known as the Godfather in Manila's long line of speakeasies, Blind Pig is a breeding ground for some of the city's best bartenders. Grow some hair on your chest with the Smokey Bastard (it comes with real smoke). The entrance is found inside a low metal-grilled gate, blink and you'll miss it. Keep your eyes peeled for the braille next to front door.

ABV (Alcohol By Volume)
To say that ABV was inspired by The Great Gatsby would be doing it a disservice. Complete with an entrance through an elevator shaft in a tiny hotdog joint named Lazy Bastard, a quirky password ("A glass of giggle water, please"), and a fine selection of gin and absinthe, ABV stays true to the Prohibition-style concept without being camp or tacky. Ask for "The Bible": a lengthy, secret cocktail menu. Fancy yourself being a budding mixologist? Sign up for one of ABV's cocktail classes.

The Curator
Coffee shop by day, cocktail lounge by night. Hidden inside Cyrano Wine Bar, The Curator is less cafe/lounge, and more beverage atelier for quality hand-crafted coffee and cocktails that can be personalized to suite your taste.

The Bonbon Club
Stepping into the quaint and casual Bonbon Club, you'll feel right at home where patrons are encouraged to choose the music from the vinyl collection. They don't serve food, although you can hop out to Pepi Cubano next door for a piping hot Cuban sandwich. But what the Bonbon Club lacks in bites, they make up for with their extensive Gin collection from around the world.

Bank Bar
You've crawled through a closet, entered through the exit, and come in through an elevator shaft - finding a bar in the storage space of a 7-Eleven doesn't seem so strange after all that. Although still technically a speakeasy, Bank Bar is more stylish drinking den than secret hideaway. Come dressed to impress, but stay for the topnotch bottle selection.
