Good Stay, Tanga room fun and good band. Front desk took longer because printer needed fixing but we got to Tanga room before closing so it was fine.

We've stayed at multiple different Fairmont properties over the past year and am a Platinum member. Standards seem to have dropped dramatically since COVID. We are planning several trips to San Francisco this year and had hoped the Fairmont would be our home base as we have fond memories of attending dozens of events there over the years from when we lived in San Francisco. However, we are trying a different hotel next week to see how they compare after a disappointing experience. Pros: It is beautiful iconic building atop Nob Hill. Many old photographs line the walls showing the fascinating history. The rooms are wonderful (we stayed in a very large corner suite). And the Tonga Room has not missed a step and the cover charge for the live band is waived for guests. Beware: the tiki drinks are strong. Also, great bell staff. But now the cons: -The hotel seems a bit understaffed. Only one person at reception upon arrival with a long line (and no Elite status counter). Long waits for anyone to answer the phone whether it is Royal Service or in room dining. Short staffing likely contributed to the other issues below. -Service is inconsistent at best. Sometimes housekeeping replaces coffee, sometimes they don't. Sometimes they provide new towels, other times they don't. Only bottled water if you ask for it each day. Text asking if you need anything? Great, but it came the morning we were leaving. -In room dining is inconsistent: Eggs Benedict are perfectly poached one day and hard boiled the next. Ordered "kids" pancakes two days in a row (the staff even asking if I want them with chocolate chips); the next day: "there is no kids menu, just regular adult portion....must have been the chef that day". Now I wonder what I was charged for the smaller kids chocolate chip pancakes! Note: the hotel actively promotes an American Girl kids package, so not having a kids menu would be a bit odd. [Note: the staff delivering the in room dining were excellent] -No bartender? Met a friend for lunch at the Laurel Court restaurant off the lobby. We were informed that there was no bartender until 4:00pm! They could pour beer or wine but after watching the server dump sparkling wine into a glass allowing it to completely foam over (and the wrong bottle to boot), we decided to walk down the hill to the Ritz Carlton where there were not one but two bartenders in the lobby bar (staffing shortage seems to be tied to willingness to pay wages). Also the selection of wine by the glass is very limited. Only four sparkling wines, with three by the same average California producer Mumm (and one prosecco). I've never been to a Fairmont without one or more French Champagnes on the menu. A far cry from the Champagne bar at the Plaza in NYC. It seems there has to be a point when you can no longer blame covid for problems. The Fairmont is advertising (and charging for) exceptional service. They need to find a way to provide it whether though better training (like how to pour champagne or knowing the menu) or paying wages necessary to have appropriate staffing levels. It used to be impeccable. I hope for it to be so again; but I think they will need to earn my business back.
Room has an odor and horrible interior view. Overall lobby stuffy and dated. Bar area not lively,
The heater was so warm and noisy that it was impossible to get good sleep. Really disappointing.
Stayed for three nights in late January. Excellent location. Did not have time to use many of the hotel's amenities, like the gym or spa. Hopefully next time.
The hotel was lovely. The check in process, the room service, everything was great. BUT house keeping cd use some help

I would come back AND recommend this hotel. I gave it an 8 because most of the charging ports in lamps, etc. didn't work and had to search for floor outlets. Was in a brief panic because flew 6 hours and needed to charge laptop and devices for speaking engagement FOG art & design the next morning and devices were not charged! Had time to get them charged enough. Also FABULOUS view from 16th floor facing the bay but the windows were quite dirty. Also very cold in the tower, had to keep heat on 80 (max) to keep room warm. Food was okay at Laurel Court. Room service food was very delicious! Overall pleased and would stay again. Fun hotel. Most everyone was very nice. Computer down when I checked out so I couldn't see my bill until I landed East Coast but all good!

I was not aware of my coffee setup , no explanation or visible introduction. The suite is tired, lots of switches and tub/shower. Nice staff !
