Alster Lake

Elbe River and Harbour

-

Hamburg's enchanting and beloved city lake was dammed in 1190, so it's not really a lake in the hydrological sense. The Inner Alster nestles in the city centre on Jungfernstieg; the venerable facades of the Alsterhaus, the Hapag-Lloyd headquarters and our Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten are reflected in it. The Outer Alster is a feast for the eyes, green parks, white illustrious villas on its shores and countless sailing boats in its glittering waves, giving us locals reason to claim that we live in the most beautiful city in the world. You can take an exquisite stroll along its banks for 7.4 kilometres, stop now and then at little cafés like the Alsterperle, have a drink of Alsterwasser and let your gaze wander and revel over the eponymous body of water. Or you can rent a rowing boat from Bodo's landing stage and enjoy the Alster from the water.

"The Alster is giving us locals reason to claim that we live in the most beautiful city in the world."
