- Bear Awareness Top Priority for Fairmont -

As the largest hotel in the resort municipality of Whistler, Fairmont Chateau Whistler leaders recognized an opportunity to help educate not only hotel guests but the community at large. On Friday, June 9, Fairmont officially unveiled prominent visitor signage containing bear awareness information in key, high-traffic locations throughout the resort.

“Bears are a very important part of our community and ecosystem,” stated Norman Mastalir, Managing Director at Fairmont Chateau Whistler. “We have supported the Get Bear Smart Society (GBS) over many years and look forward to continuing this relationship for years to come.” Initiatives such as the annual Fairmont Colleague ‘Bear Swim’ fundraiser have raised thousands of dollars and invaluable awareness, and the Fairmont’s own charitable foundation has donated almost $30,000 to GBS since 2004.

The new signage investment, totaling CAD $6,625.00, was made possible through a grant program called Fairmont CAREs (Community Assistance and Responsibility to the Environment). Initially introduced in 2005 as part of Fairmont’s Green Partnership Program and in support of the promise to think globally and act locally, this program perfectly embodies the commitment to having a positive environmental and social impact in the communities where Fairmont Hotels do business and to preserving the places which guests and colleagues work, live and play.

This is the second recent CARE grant Fairmont Chateau Whistler received to improve its local community. In 2015, the Chateau opened Whistler’s ‘Salish Stroll’, an ethnobotanical path connecting Fairmont guests to the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre.
