The Savoy Wins ‘Green Hotel of the Year’ in the 2013 Hotel Cateys

4 December 2013 — The Savoy is proud to have been awarded
‘Green Hotel of the Year’ at the Hotel Cateys 2013.

The Savoy, a Fairmont managed hotel, was named Green Hotel of the Year at the Caterer and Hotelkeeper’s Hotel Cateys 2013, which took place on Friday 29 November. Widely regarded as the ‘Oscars’ of the hospitality industry, the Hotel Cateys recognise the most successful hotels, hoteliers and hotel employees across the UK.

This award is the latest accolade in a run of environmental recognition for
The Savoy which continues to lead the way in sustainability issues in the luxury hotel market.

This year The Savoy has also been awarded:
• Virtuoso Best of the Best for Sustainable Tourism Leadership
• Green Hotel of the Year, European Hospitality Awards
• Considerate Green Team of the Year, Considerate Hoteliers Awards

In 2010, the hotel reopened after what was considered the most ambitious hotel restoration in British history, encompassing the whole building.  The Savoy’s aim was to be not only the most luxurious five-star hotel in London but also the most environmentally responsible, with over £2.4 million invested in high efficiency sustainable technologies.  Debra Patterson, The Savoy’s Sustainability Manager, under the Fairmont Sustainability Partnership Programme has supported and driven many initiatives implemented at The Savoy to help reduce the hotel’s environmental impact on the environment.

On receiving the award Debra Patterson commented; ‘We are incredibly proud to have won this prestigious award, recognising the very best in the industry. We have worked extremely hard to reduce our impact on the environment by implementing a number of innovative solutions and strategies, in order to lead the way in sustainable luxury hospitality.‘

Innovative projects and new technologies include a combined heat and power plant reducing the hotel’s reliance on the national grid; a central refrigeration plant reclaiming heat from kitchen appliances to preheat hot water; the recycling of natural corks; the recycling of kitchen scraps and leftover food to renewable energy, through a combination of CHP and Anaerobic Digestion processes – a sustainable solution which is an integral part of our carbon reduction strategy, including turning used cooking oil into biodiesel.

Through authentic experiences, Savoy guests learn about the history of the hotel and the culture of the local area, situated n the banks of the River Thames, making the integration of sustainability a natural characteristic. For example, The Savoy’s Concierge and Green Butler service provide our guests with an interesting insight in to the less well-trodden areas of London to visit, including green places of interest such as ethical trading shops, local artisan outlets, top organic restaurants, sustainable walks, outdoor activities, heritage sites, nature walks, cycle and jogging routes and so on, to give our eco-conscious guests a truly local and authentic experience.  Our seafood restaurant, Kaspar’s Seafood Bar and Grill, is a member of the Sustainable Restaurant Association who work with us to source our fish and seafood responsibly.

The Savoy events team also offers a sustainable meeting option, working with planners to help minimise the ecological footprint of their meetings and events.
