The Savoy Wins Virtuoso 2013 Best of the Best Award for Sustainable Tourism Leadership - Hotel
London, August 16, 2013
The Savoy was announced winner of the Virtuoso Best of the Best Award for Sustainable Tourism Leadership – Hotel at last night’s prestigious Hotels & Resorts dinner held as part of the 25th annual Virtuoso Travel Week, currently taking place in Las Vegas.
The Savoy was shortlisted as the only city hotel nominated in its category, competing against renowned resort destinations, which included Frigate Island Resort, Seychelles; AndBeyond Phinda, South Africa; Inkaterra Machu Picchu Peublo Hotel, Peru; and Soneva Fushi, Maldives.
Since 2005, The Savoy’s commitment to reduce its impact on the environment has continued to remain a focus through a comprehensive programme of environmental best practices throughout its operations, focusing on energy and water conservation, waste management, innovative recycling initiatives and community projects. Sustainability is a core value and is involved in all business decision-making. Integrating the principles and practices of the ‘Sustainability Partnership Programme’ of Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, The Savoy is able to encompass environmental, social and economic priorities equally, with accountability and integrity. The Savoy includes carbon management in design, materials, products and operations to help maximise its commitment to evolving, upgrading and measuring sustainable performance long-term. Numerous innovative projects help the hotel to reduce its operational impact, improve community well-being and ecosystems, inform and engage guests, and also educate and empower employees, in both a meaningful and collaborative manner.
Kiaran MacDonald, Managing Director of The Savoy, attended the dinner and upon receiving the award commented, “I am greatly honoured to accept this prestigious award, which recognises our hotel as a leading sustainable tourism provider, on behalf of my Savoy colleagues.
The Sustainability Partnership Programme of Fairmont Hotels & Resorts has provided us with a lasting legacy of sustainable stewardship, helping us preserve our cultural and natural heritage. Balancing economic, environmental and social priorities in our hotel operations has been key to our success, and we hope that that our commitment to sustainable tourism will inspire others across the industry to achieve positive long-term change.”

The Savoy, originally opened in 1889, has played host to royalty, world leaders and legends of the stage and screen. This iconic hotel continues to improve with age, thanks in part to a recent restoration that was among the most ambitious in British history. Today the hotel boasts 268 rooms and suites, many of which afford views over the Thames and city of London, some of the most well-known restaurants and bars in London including the American Bar, Beaufort Bar and Savoy Grill, and magnificent meeting space steeped in history. The Savoy has announced two new concepts for May 2013, including the introduction of a new restaurant, Kaspar’s Seafood Bar & Grill, and a partnership with the Savoy Pier, a private pier where several luxury river yachts are available for private events and spectacular tours on the Thames. Also recently introduced is The Savoy Suite Welcome, incorporating The Savoy’s legendary butler service, private car transfers, in-room bar, wi-fi and the pressing of one garment per guest for those staying in one-bedroom suites and above.
