Reminiscent of the hot springs that beckoned travellers over 100 years ago, the pulsating waterfalls and the mineral pool in the heart of the Banff spa soothe troubled spirits.
1888
The Beginning
William Cornelius Van Horne had a vision to bring the beauty of the Canadian Rocky Mountains to the rest of the world. He commissioned blueprints for an impressive hotel to be built at the convergence of the Bow and Spray River, in what is now known as Canada's first National Park. Construction began in 1887 and the hotel publically opened on June 1, 1888.
1900s The 20th Century
By the start of the twentieth century, the Banff Springs luxury Hotel had developed into one of the top three mountain getaways in North America. Disaster struck in 1926 when the original wooden hotel burnt down. It was rebuilt larger and in its present appearance commencing in 1928.
1940s Adapting to a New Way of Life
Through the 1940s to 60s, the hotel struggled to reclaim the success it had before the war. The hotel went through a significant change, adapting to the economics of the time. Transportation, convenience and availability to monetary funds jointly changed the whole perspective of the hotel.
"Since we can't export the scenery, we'll have to import the tourists."
William Cornelius Van Horne
By the 70s, the hotel reached a pivotal point. For the first time, Banff Springs remained open for the winter season, becoming a year-round resort destination. The 80s then brought expansion and renovation back to the hotel.

The hotel and its surroundings are simply gorgeous! Our room was lovely and comfortable, with a beautiful view. Breakfast was amazing: huge spread and everything was delicious! Service was impeccable, from check-in to check-out, staff were extremely friendly and helpful without exceptions! The spa was an excellent experience (probably the best massage we have ever had!), and we really enjoyed the hiking trails and Banff town centre. It was a wonderful trip, and we hope to be back again in future!

Poor dining experience, followed by construction noise early in the morning. Terrible stay!
Overall the hotel experience was amazing, however, we had one glitch with our club trip over miscommunication with breakfast. The food and beverage manager, Catherine indicated that breakfast was included, so the group went to have breakfast that first morning and was asked to pay. This became an issue with all. Back and forth with the assistant manager, travel agent and ourselves. Catherine never replied to our emails. We ended up paying for that bill, but it did put a damper on the groups experience.
I attended a conference at the Banff springs hotel March 2023. The hotel has great service and absolutely astonishing location with beautiful views all over and overwhelming nature as soon as you walk out the door. Conference facility was moderate with a small selection of standard food and poor internet connection.
My family (wife and two kids) spent our March Break at Fairmont Banff Springs. We all had the most amazing time. The hotel was in impeccable condition. The hotel staff were very helpful and gracious. And, the hotel amenities were great - especially for two younger kids. Our room was very comfortable and well kept. Overall, we had a wonderful experience. Thank you.
My check in experience was a nightmare - group bookings especially for a block need to get their act together.
We stayed on the Gold level. The food and service were above and beyond. Beautiful room with amazing views. So much to do on the grounds and nearby area in Banff. We did not want to leave.

During my stay for a conference (IPPSA), the AC rattled so loudly the entire time that my ear plugs weren't able to block out the noise at night. The noise was so unsettling that I could not sleep and eventually had to shut off the AC for the duration of the stay.
