Discover
Reminiscent of the hot springs that beckoned travellers over 100 years ago, the pulsating waterfalls and the mineral pool in the heart of the Banff spa soothe troubled spirits.
The Beginning
William Cornelius Van Horne had a vision to bring the beauty of the Canadian Rocky Mountains to the rest of the world. He commissioned blueprints for an impressive hotel to be built at the convergence of the Bow and Spray River, in what is now known as Canada's first National Park. Construction began in 1887 and the hotel publically opened on June 1, 1888.
By the start of the twentieth century, the Banff Springs luxury Hotel had developed into one of the top three mountain getaways in North America. Disaster struck in 1926 when the original wooden hotel burnt down. It was rebuilt larger and in its present appearance commencing in 1928.
Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression
Throughout the 1920s and 30s, the hotel was able to combine day-to-day hotel life with the concept of luxurious hotel living. The depression played a part in the 'golden era' as well.
Through the 1940s to 60s, the hotel struggled to reclaim the success it had before the war. The hotel went through a significant change, adapting to the economics of the time. Transportation, convenience and availability to monetary funds jointly changed the whole perspective of the hotel.
"Since we can't export the scenery, we'll have to import the tourists."
William Cornelius Van Horne
By the 70s, the hotel reached a pivotal point. For the first time, Banff Springs remained open for the winter season, becoming a year-round resort destination. The 80s then brought expansion and renovation back to the hotel.

I had a truly wonderful stay at the Fairmont Banff Springs! I stayed for my birthday and the staff helped to make it really special stay, from the front desk team, to the spa team and all of the servers at the restaurants (rundle, vermillion, castellos, in room dining and 1888), the level of service and care they provided made for an incredible stay and birthday!
5 star by all standards
Beautiful hotel. Friendly staff. Great location. Enjoyed the bus service to downtown.
The hotel itself is a reason to visit however the service is the reason to stay. Literally the best hospitality at every location within the property from the Rundle Lounge to the Activities staff and Canine Ambassador experience. The rooms have the charm of the old castle with modern amenities. There are few properties that can compare to the Fairmont Banff Springs in terms of a full compliment of fine food, drink, facilities and staff. Do not miss this gem.
On lands and waters that have been used for millennia by Indigenous Peoples for sustenance, ceremony, trade and travel a castle was built. This magical place that has provided lifetime memories to princesses, cowboys, visionaries and those that have and can make today and tomorrow better, as well as two vacationers. This castle has “Million Dollar” views, clear waters, abundant wildlife, a rich history, and amazing people. I want to call out Scott, Kylie, and Tyler for making our stay better. We did not have any interaction that was not friendly and informative.
