Reminiscent of the hot springs that beckoned travellers over 100 years ago, the pulsating waterfalls and the mineral pool in the heart of the Banff spa soothe troubled spirits.
The Beginning
William Cornelius Van Horne had a vision to bring the beauty of the Canadian Rocky Mountains to the rest of the world. He commissioned blueprints for an impressive hotel to be built at the convergence of the Bow and Spray River, in what is now known as Canada's first National Park. Construction began in 1887 and the hotel publically opened on June 1, 1888.
By the start of the twentieth century, the Banff Springs luxury Hotel had developed into one of the top three mountain getaways in North America. Disaster struck in 1926 when the original wooden hotel burnt down. It was rebuilt larger and in its present appearance commencing in 1928.
Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression
Throughout the 1920s and 30s, the hotel was able to combine day-to-day hotel life with the concept of luxurious hotel living. The depression played a part in the 'golden era' as well.
Through the 1940s to 60s, the hotel struggled to reclaim the success it had before the war. The hotel went through a significant change, adapting to the economics of the time. Transportation, convenience and availability to monetary funds jointly changed the whole perspective of the hotel.
"Since we can't export the scenery, we'll have to import the tourists."
William Cornelius Van Horne
By the 70s, the hotel reached a pivotal point. For the first time, Banff Springs remained open for the winter season, becoming a year-round resort destination. The 80s then brought expansion and renovation back to the hotel.

There were 8 of us in the family celebrating our 33rd wedding anniversary. We were fortunate to stay for a week at the Banff Springs Hotel. The Fairmont Gold Service was outstanding. This was a new experience for us and it was over the top. From the seamless check-in, to the Gold lounge food and drinks, to the Concierge Gold team...they made everything so easy and nice. The Concierge team answered all of our questions, both before our arrival and during our stay. I emailed many questions to the team as I was preparing for our vacation and someone always got back to me with helpful information. Then while we were staying at the hotel, I was able to text any questions or requests we had, and they took care of us immediately. It was amazing. I especially want to mention Suketu Patel. Suketu spent some time putting the Google Maps App on my phone and downloading some directions for me. Then made sure I was comfortable using them. He was friendly, helpful, and nice to visit with!
The hotel was beautiful. Great location, with one foot in and one foot out of town. The staff were mostly extremely friendly. The only two negatives, which was poor plumbing in the shower (it flooded quickly) and difficulties managing a golf reservation through the hotel were promptly addressed by the manager when I mentioned them following my stay. The housekeeping and valet were fantastic. We received many congratulations for our anniversary. The restaurants and room service were all delicious and came with friendly service. The only 1 point deduction comes from the view, as I paid extra for one but it was difficult to see much other than the other side of the hotel from my window, unless I stood sideways/craned my neck a bit. But that was well compensated for by the view from everywhere else. I would definitely consider staying here again.

My husband became ill and the staff was exceptional with helping me.The front desk called twice to check on him and the concierge (I think it was Mr.Linn)was so helpful. He helped me book a transport to Calgary so we could fly home.He also sent up some extra water which was a godsend.
Staff were ample and easily available. We truly felt like we were in a world class hotel.
We liked our suite, which was an upgrade from what we booked. The bathroom was very small but we learned that this was due to historical reasons. The Hotel is very large so takes a while to navigate. We had access to the Executive floor lounge so only needed to use the restaurants for dinner. We dined at Vermilion one night. Good food and service but it is not the place for an intimate dinner and if there are larger groups there it becomes very noisy and it was difficult to have a conversation with my dinner partner. The second night we booked the Castello Italiana restaurant but we’re seated in the overflow bar. Again the food and service was very good and we were probably fortunate to be seated in a quieter area.
We were welcomed by the staff who gathered our luggage and brought it to our room very quickly. The concierge was very helpful with suggestions on where to go and what to see.
This was by far the most magical hotel I've ever been too. The views all around, everywhere you looked were just magical. My room (995) was small but updated and clean. I understood and liked that it was small and stayed true to the history of the hotel but I do wish other features or furniture had that same historic vibe like most of the hotel. Both dining experiences were WAY over priced for mediocre food. We had Brazen in downtown Banff the night before and they do food right and expensive. There is a way to do both and Fairmont just relies on t's name and being historic. Service and the people are some of kindest I've ever met. The details throughout the hotel were disappointing, for example: Scott paper towels in the bathroom. Disneyland hotels would do something special and specific for people spending THOUSANDS every stay at their place. Nothing felt special and iconic except the outside, pool area and the lobby. Took the history tour and lOVED it, wish it was longer. I would personally never stay here again because of the price and what I feel like is offered at that price. Relying on the beauty and history is just not fair but again loved all the people I encountered.
