Reminiscent of the hot springs that beckoned travellers over 100 years ago, the pulsating waterfalls and the mineral pool in the heart of the Banff spa soothe troubled spirits.
1888
The Beginning
William Cornelius Van Horne had a vision to bring the beauty of the Canadian Rocky Mountains to the rest of the world. He commissioned blueprints for an impressive hotel to be built at the convergence of the Bow and Spray River, in what is now known as Canada's first National Park. Construction began in 1887 and the hotel publically opened on June 1, 1888.
1900s The 20th Century
By the start of the twentieth century, the Banff Springs luxury Hotel had developed into one of the top three mountain getaways in North America. Disaster struck in 1926 when the original wooden hotel burnt down. It was rebuilt larger and in its present appearance commencing in 1928.
1940s Adapting to a New Way of Life
Through the 1940s to 60s, the hotel struggled to reclaim the success it had before the war. The hotel went through a significant change, adapting to the economics of the time. Transportation, convenience and availability to monetary funds jointly changed the whole perspective of the hotel.
"Since we can't export the scenery, we'll have to import the tourists."
William Cornelius Van Horne
By the 70s, the hotel reached a pivotal point. For the first time, Banff Springs remained open for the winter season, becoming a year-round resort destination. The 80s then brought expansion and renovation back to the hotel.

Stopped in Banff Springs on a road trip through Alberta and British Columbia. Decided to treat ourselves to a night in the Castle. What I appreciated were all the free opportunities available. Bus passes to get you around town, Bike rentals, an hour at the range and more. The restaurants were equally as good with meal options and the setting, especially in the morning and evening, is really just second to none!
We had a lovely time at the hotel, and were well taken care of. The Hotel History tour was excellent, and there were lots of places to find entertainment. We would have appreciated a hotel map, given the size of the building and the number of amenities. Also, access to a guest or preferred-rate continental breakfast would have been a nice touch.
Mixed feelings. Front desk staff and Concierge were great people. Our guide for History tour and Wilderness tour (Marissa) was great. Room was small; especially the bathroom was small. Surface of bathtub was peeling off; bathroom wallpaper needs to be cleaned or replaced; vent cover was very dusty. Costellos was very loud and pricey. Lunch on the outdoor Terrace was great. Wife's spa experience was good. I found it difficult to get good detailed information on the website. The hotel is beautiful and interesting to explore the public areas.
Beautiful hotel in an amazing town. Visit was excellent.
From Gold Level Concierge, to every member of staff, restaurant employees and valet attendants, we are so grateful for the service, attention to detail and commitment to ensuring our stay is 10000% satisfactory. Every desire and request is always greeted with pleasant smile and an attempt to make it perfect. We are forever Fairmont fans. Thank you
We loved this hotel; The architecture. The room was a bit small, but great view. The restaurants The bed The service
I don't know how much bragging I could do about our stay at this amazing Palace. It was a special stay for us. It was our first time there and won't be our last. We have made this place a very memorable one. Special thanks to the wonderful/amazing staff at Rundle Bar for making our stay extra special.

We are senior citizens and we were given a room which had bathroom in a different level. We got it changed. The hotel design was very confusing.
