Discover
Reminiscent of the hot springs that beckoned travellers over 100 years ago, the pulsating waterfalls and the mineral pool in the heart of the Banff spa soothe troubled spirits.
The Beginning
William Cornelius Van Horne had a vision to bring the beauty of the Canadian Rocky Mountains to the rest of the world. He commissioned blueprints for an impressive hotel to be built at the convergence of the Bow and Spray River, in what is now known as Canada's first National Park. Construction began in 1887 and the hotel publically opened on June 1, 1888.
By the start of the twentieth century, the Banff Springs luxury Hotel had developed into one of the top three mountain getaways in North America. Disaster struck in 1926 when the original wooden hotel burnt down. It was rebuilt larger and in its present appearance commencing in 1928.
Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression
Throughout the 1920s and 30s, the hotel was able to combine day-to-day hotel life with the concept of luxurious hotel living. The depression played a part in the 'golden era' as well.
Through the 1940s to 60s, the hotel struggled to reclaim the success it had before the war. The hotel went through a significant change, adapting to the economics of the time. Transportation, convenience and availability to monetary funds jointly changed the whole perspective of the hotel.
"Since we can't export the scenery, we'll have to import the tourists."
William Cornelius Van Horne
By the 70s, the hotel reached a pivotal point. For the first time, Banff Springs remained open for the winter season, becoming a year-round resort destination. The 80s then brought expansion and renovation back to the hotel.

Stayed the weekend for a birthday celebration. Visited the spa which was marvelous, and then dinner in the Vermillion room.
Service and room was very nice. Only negative was our room was ready when we arrived (early) so were moved to a different room on the 3rd floor (original was 6th with a better view). Then there was a baby next door to our room that starting crying at 4 am and didn't stop. Didn't get a lot sleep in our one night stay at the Banff Springs.
last minute one day strategy session for executive group.
We had a wonderful time. We have stayed at your hotel on a number of occasions. Your staff are so friendly, enthusiastic and conversational. Everyone we talked to showed a genuine instead in us. The text system you have for issues and reservations is first class. When we checked in we had a junior suite directly across from the elevator #661 on Saturday night it was very busy with various private functions. There we many loud conversation outside our room. I mentioned if it was possible to change rooms and were advised that we could but a day later. My wife and I decided it wasn’t worth the hassle. To our surprise your staff credited our 3 days self parking charges and complimented our remaking two breakfasts. A very nice unexpected act of kindness. We love your magical hotel. We have travelled all over the world and we feel this is the best. Being there this time of the year to see your Christmas decorations was another treat. Well done.
Loved the hotel - beautiful and iconic. Couple of suggestions and why I didn't give a higher rating: - coffee shop very expensive - really wish there were more quiet spaces with seating around the hotel to meet up with people or just sit and read - had a few wonderful nights in the outdoor pool, but one terrible one that got way overcrowded with kids; suggest the last few hours be adults only for quiet relaxing wind down to the day without balls being thrown around and kids racing around; even the whirlpool was filled with kids - new staff were being trained during my stay; for most of my encounters there was a seasoned staff member with a new person, but on other occasions there wasn't and the new person wasn't yet ready I think to be on their own All in all, a wonderful wonderful stay. The above are small things that just would have made things even more wonderful ;)
The staff at "Gold" service (especially) were very friendly and knowledgeable. The fact that they recognized you by name, was a very nice touch. I just came back from a high-end resort in Mexico and the experience was entirely different. Whatever "training" Banff Springs does with their employees; is fantastic. Things happen.....but were dealt with so effortlessly, it was like they did not happen at all. The only issue we had..... was my partner requested certain issues to be addressed during massage (mainly neck and shoulder area) and the massage therapist did not get to them till less than 10 minutes before his 90 minute massage was done. The therapist ignored the issues he wanted addressed.

the bathroom is constantly making nnoise, that is very distubring at hignt during the sleep wakes me up. walls are so thin, every sound from other rooms could be heard and woke me up. when people walk and talk in the corrider that would wake me up. I have experienced a neck pain following the night in the hotel.
Staff were very friendly & helpful Amenities were exceptional
We stayed on the Gold floor and loved our room, the view and the Gold amenities. It’s a large property with lots to do, great restaurants and a nice spa. Also felt very festive with the snowy mountains and Christmas decorations!
I stayed on a Saturday, primarily to use the spa and relaxing weekend. The spa was fantastic. We enjoyed our time in the pools after a massage. I was disappointed at the fairly limited size of menus in restaurants throughout the hotel. The overall stay was nice and was enjoyed.
