Reminiscent of the hot springs that beckoned travellers over 100 years ago, the pulsating waterfalls and the mineral pool in the heart of the Banff spa soothe troubled spirits.
The Beginning
William Cornelius Van Horne had a vision to bring the beauty of the Canadian Rocky Mountains to the rest of the world. He commissioned blueprints for an impressive hotel to be built at the convergence of the Bow and Spray River, in what is now known as Canada's first National Park. Construction began in 1887 and the hotel publically opened on June 1, 1888.
By the start of the twentieth century, the Banff Springs luxury Hotel had developed into one of the top three mountain getaways in North America. Disaster struck in 1926 when the original wooden hotel burnt down. It was rebuilt larger and in its present appearance commencing in 1928.
Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression
Throughout the 1920s and 30s, the hotel was able to combine day-to-day hotel life with the concept of luxurious hotel living. The depression played a part in the 'golden era' as well.
Through the 1940s to 60s, the hotel struggled to reclaim the success it had before the war. The hotel went through a significant change, adapting to the economics of the time. Transportation, convenience and availability to monetary funds jointly changed the whole perspective of the hotel.
"Since we can't export the scenery, we'll have to import the tourists."
William Cornelius Van Horne
By the 70s, the hotel reached a pivotal point. For the first time, Banff Springs remained open for the winter season, becoming a year-round resort destination. The 80s then brought expansion and renovation back to the hotel.

Overall a good hotel with excellent staff. Stay was overshadowed by arriving on Saturday 2nd March and being given a room directly above an ongoing wedding. Party. The bass from the music was unbearable even when using ear plugs as it still reverberated through the walls, floor and even the bed. After travelling almost 24hours to get to what you describe yourself as a ‘luxury hotel’, my husband and I were not best impressed! We both took a shower on arrival and were horrified that the bathroom was tiny and something out of the 70’s with an over the bath shower that we could both just stand under and neither of us are tall at 5ft 8. After complaining we were offered a new room on the 6th floor. This was more modern - the bathroom at least had a shower but still small however we remained in this room for the rest of our vacation- 7 nights. As the primary reason for our trip was skiing was also surprised the guest rooms had no dedicated facilities to dry wet ski equipment such as gloves and socks- we had to resort to hanging on the lamps and main room light. The elevators being out for the best part of a day was an inconvenience being on the 6th floor -but this was due to a burst pipe. Other facilities we used - restaurants, bars, spa, front desk were all good.
Everything was perfect!
Front Desk was very accommodating to all of my requirements and very helpful.
Just a quick one night getaway.
We were there for our granddaughters wedding and needed early check in. Thankfully we were able to get access to our room very early and we are so grateful for that! We were truly treated like royalties. The young fellow who greeted us when we arrived was so friendly and when we ran into him later in the day he asked how our stay was going and if everything was ok. He was there the next day when we were leaving and he was just as friendly. Breakfast buffet was amazing!
My family of four stayed in 2 suites in the Gatehouse for 1 week. Every request was met with a positive and timely response. Each employee we interacted with greeted us by name and with a smile. By the end of the week, we felt like part of the Fairmont Banff family.
I was located in room 1620 in the coachhouse section and was extremely disappointed with the room. Not only was it small and outdated but worst of all there was a pair of used men's underwear hanging on the bathroom door when I checked in. That is one of the worst experiences I have ever had and does not give you much confidence that the room was actually cleaned.
Dear Elle and the Fairmont Gold Team, I apologize for the delay in writing this, but I want to assure you that it does not reflect the exceptional service and attention we experienced during our stay from Feb 23-25. The effort you put into providing upgrade options for our stay was thorough and heartfelt. You attentively addressed all our questions and concerns, providing effective resolutions. Having frequented the Banff Springs over the past 22 years, we've encountered various levels of service. I have no doubt that you and your team rank among the best we've ever had the pleasure of dealing with. Thank you for ensuring our stay was not only comfortable but truly enjoyable. We eagerly anticipate our return and look forward to recommending the Banff Springs and the Fairmont Gold to our new and returning agency clients. All the Best, Jason W. Athenian
We had an amazing time during our weekend stay, all staff were incredibly helpful with any and all requests. The views and scenery are incredible. The only issue we ran into was that I had requested an early check in at 2pm, I called the hotel when we were on our way to make sure the room would be ready and was told that it was. When we arrived at the check in desk at 2pm they told us our room was not ready and we had to wait about an hour until it was finally ready which wasn’t terrible but was a little disappointing after driving several hours and having been told that it was ready for us on the phone.
