Venice in the Hills

Venice in the Hills - Claremont's Carnivale

This February, Claremont Club & Spa brings the centuries-old tradition of the Venice Carnivale to life in the hills of Oakland. Beginning Friday, February 12th, and the two weekends following, the Claremont's "Front Lawn" will be transformed into a Venetian street scene. Photo opportunities themed cookie decorating and the opportunity for you to create your own authentic Venetian mask are just a few of the activities that will be available.   Our chefs have prepared a special menu highlighting Venice and Italy's flavors to enjoy al fresco in Limewood Restaurant or to take home.

The tradition of Carnivale dates back to the 12th century. The costumes, events, and parties over the ten days leading up to Fat Tuesday make Venice Carnivale one of Italy’s biggest events. Still, it’s the masks – the quintessential feature – that makes the Carnival of Venice unique. Masks protect the wearer's identity and removed any social differences allowing aristocrats and peasants to mingle together and perhaps indulge in illicit activities like gambling, clandestine affairs, dancing, and partying the night away.
