1910s
The Beginning
Fairmont Copley Plaza was built on the original site of the Museum of Fine Arts, which was in Copley Square from 1876 until 1909 when the museum moved into its existing building on Huntington Avenue. Dozens of horse-drawn carts took the museum’s collection of thousands of pieces of art approximately one mile down the street to the new museum.
Long regarded as a Boston institution, The Copley Plaza was formally opened on August 19, 1912, about 16 months after construction of the building began. Mayor of Boston John F. “Honey Fitz” Fitzgerald, President John F. Kennedy’s grandfather, presided over a reception for more than 1,000 guests, including local and national dignitaries, civic leaders, captains of industry, and stage and movie stars. So prestigious was The Copley Plaza’s opening that rooms had been booked 16 months in advance.
1912 Innovator
The Fairmont Copley Plaza is recognized as an innovator in the hotel industry. The hotel is known for these industry firsts: the first completely air-conditioned hotel in Boston, the first hotel with an international reservations system, the first hotel anywhere to accept credit cards, and the first to offer direct telephone dialing for guests.
1930s Grand Events
"The opening presented to Boston one of the most colorful and brilliant pictures the city has ever seen. It marked a new era in hotel-keeping, not only in Boston but in the entire country."
As one newspaper noted
During World War II, elevator operators had to be at least 65 years of age, releasing younger workers for war production activities.

Valet man John got us to follow the Freedom Trail until our room was ready. Had a few drinks at the hotel Oak Long Bar.

The room was spacious, well-appointed, and comfy. Service was excellent, staff courteous and helpful. I loved the resident pooch! The hotel is a gem in terms of architectural detail, decor, and history-but at the same time, I felt very comfortable calling it home for three days. Thank you for a wonderful stay.
Celebrated moms 87th birthday, staff was amazing starting with Carolyn Bertolino accommodating request for adjoining rooms, bellman who greeted us (forget his name), concierge Joe and of course Korey your mascot who stole the show and made my Mother’s Day! Can’t wait to come back.

Joe the bellman is a joy as always. Miranda did a great job at check in. Joe at the door was very welcoming.
Great food, atmosphere and ambience
The common areas downstairs are fantastic but the rooms were a disappointment. Poor quality linens and pillows and noisy thin walls. We were awaken all night as people flushed toilets and turned on water

I came back from seeing a show and hoped to grab something to eat at the bar, or through room service, or at worst over pay to take something from the mini bar. I was disappointed to find out that none of these were options. There was not even a vending machine on site. When I called to the desk I was told I would have to go across the street for so much as a bag of pretzels. This was disappointing. I would probably still stay there again, because otherwise it is a nice hotel. I will just plan ahead.

It was a very nice suite and very clean

This is the second time I have stayed at this hotel. First time was in the early 90's for a wedding and it seems nothing has changed much.... The size of the room was nice and the bathroom was ok, but the condition of the hotel begs attention and much needed maintenance. chipped paint, worn elevator panels, hallway carpet needs to be replaced on 4, etc.....
Positive: location, beautiful lobby, hotel bar, friendly staff Negative: rooms could use some updating, no insulation- I could hear my neighbors talking even with the TV on.
