The Beginning
Fairmont Copley Plaza was built on the original site of the Museum of Fine Arts, which was in Copley Square from 1876 until 1909 when the museum moved into its existing building on Huntington Avenue. Dozens of horse-drawn carts took the museum’s collection of thousands of pieces of art approximately one mile down the street to the new museum.
Long regarded as a Boston institution, The Copley Plaza was formally opened on August 19, 1912, about 16 months after construction of the building began. Mayor of Boston John F. “Honey Fitz” Fitzgerald, President John F. Kennedy’s grandfather, presided over a reception for more than 1,000 guests, including local and national dignitaries, civic leaders, captains of industry, and stage and movie stars. So prestigious was The Copley Plaza’s opening that rooms had been booked 16 months in advance.
The Fairmont Copley Plaza is recognized as an innovator in the hotel industry. The hotel is known for these industry firsts: the first completely air-conditioned hotel in Boston, the first hotel with an international reservations system, the first hotel anywhere to accept credit cards, and the first to offer direct telephone dialing for guests.
During Prohibition, the Oak Bar was known as the Merry-Go-Round Bar, a lively gathering place. Patrons celebrated the end of Prohibition in 1933 at The Copley Plaza's famous Merry-Go-Round Bar, which featured a working merry-go-round. It remained a popular gathering place through the 1970s. Pieces of the Merry-Go-Round Track have been preserved in the floor of OAK Long Bar + Kitchen.
"The opening presented to Boston one of the most colorful and brilliant pictures the city has ever seen. It marked a new era in hotel-keeping, not only in Boston but in the entire country."
As one newspaper noted
During World War II, elevator operators had to be at least 65 years of age, releasing younger workers for war production activities.

We stayed overnight last weekend for a wedding close by to the hotel. Service and accommodations were impeccable!

It was great!
I'm a 33 year old software developer employed by a firm in Boston. Last year I had my team of 3 other people all get rooms at Fairmont Copley. This year I chose to stay at Fairmont Copley again, because of how good my experience was last year. Other people chose other places closer to our office but I personally would always go back to Fairmont in a heartbeat because I greatly appreciate the atmosphere and location of the hotel. The main thing that I like about it is that it has Wes Anderson vibes and I really love the belle epoque decor. I feel like I've seen enough polished metal and glass modern design for one lifetime. I'd rather come back to a place that feels like I'm getting away from work, which is what this hotel gives me.
Sun thur Weds with 3 half meeting Staff was rude at check in couldn't get in because of late check outs till 4:15, was there around noon, would NOT even put us on waiting list to call if one came available. Asked for 12:30 check weds am and was told "we don't do that". Meeting were never set up on time and didn't bring ice to meeting until 10 am for drinks. Wouldn't clean the room and was told by staff they don't clean the rooms until you check out. Place needs a manager, you can tell if there is one, he or she isn't very good.
The hotel is great. However I stayed in a room on the 1st floor that faced the back and there were multiple trucks (garbage, general loading) making a lot of noise 3:30am onwards. It was unfortunately very difficult to sleep. I mentioned to the front desk when I departed and I will seek not staying on that side of the building in the future. It is an issue.
My room was 445 (I think) on the 4th floor next to the Boston Pops suite. That suite was crammed full of little kids, babies, etc.. I could hear crying and screaming all night through the connecting door. My nightmare
All of the service staff were incredible, but the facility seems to have suffered over the last few years; in room fridges were inoperable, sinks and tubs drained poorly, and interior doors had warped and would not shut
Overall, we had a nice experience. However, one area that confused us was when we registered we were told that we had a room credit that we could use at the bar/restaurant and that it would be automatically added to our bill. However, that did not happen and when I inquired about it I was told that you had to tell the waiter.
