The Beginning
Fairmont Copley Plaza was built on the original site of the Museum of Fine Arts, which was in Copley Square from 1876 until 1909 when the museum moved into its existing building on Huntington Avenue. Dozens of horse-drawn carts took the museum’s collection of thousands of pieces of art approximately one mile down the street to the new museum.
Long regarded as a Boston institution, The Copley Plaza was formally opened on August 19, 1912, about 16 months after construction of the building began. Mayor of Boston John F. “Honey Fitz” Fitzgerald, President John F. Kennedy’s grandfather, presided over a reception for more than 1,000 guests, including local and national dignitaries, civic leaders, captains of industry, and stage and movie stars. So prestigious was The Copley Plaza’s opening that rooms had been booked 16 months in advance.
The Fairmont Copley Plaza is recognized as an innovator in the hotel industry. The hotel is known for these industry firsts: the first completely air-conditioned hotel in Boston, the first hotel with an international reservations system, the first hotel anywhere to accept credit cards, and the first to offer direct telephone dialing for guests.
During Prohibition, the Oak Bar was known as the Merry-Go-Round Bar, a lively gathering place. Patrons celebrated the end of Prohibition in 1933 at The Copley Plaza's famous Merry-Go-Round Bar, which featured a working merry-go-round. It remained a popular gathering place through the 1970s. Pieces of the Merry-Go-Round Track have been preserved in the floor of OAK Long Bar + Kitchen.
"The opening presented to Boston one of the most colorful and brilliant pictures the city has ever seen. It marked a new era in hotel-keeping, not only in Boston but in the entire country."
As one newspaper noted
During World War II, elevator operators had to be at least 65 years of age, releasing younger workers for war production activities.

It wasn't until my last night, I realized why my allergies were irritated, the pillows and comforter were down. Customer service needs work as well, I never received a receipt and after calling twice to get a copy, I'm still waiting a week later.
Friendly front desk staff. Perfectly clean room, comfortable bed too! Housekeeping staff was very friendly and while I didn't accept it, turn down service was a very nice touch!
The elevator is extremely slow and needs to be upgraded. The services by the employees was excellent.
When we arrive, I found our room unclean, slices and pieces of bread in and on the drawers. A lot of dust, and when the cleaning persons arrived, they enter with the normal shoes (and in the room there is carpet). We were also in four…the two double beds are too small (I think queen size or smaller). The mini bar doesn’t work.

The staff very professional and friendly and loved the dog in the lobby
I stayed in the first floor and there was a terrible sewer smell in the bathroom. I think they have a cracked pipe in the walls or the toilet base was not sealed properly. It was like all of the sewer exhaust was blowing into my bathroom. It was so bad that I couldn’t even get ready in there and had to put a towel in front of the door to keep the fumes from getting into the room. I asked to be moved to another room but was told they were sold out and couldn’t move me until the following day, which they did (top floor.)

We were in Boston to celebrate our daughter receiving her master's degree from Boston University. We enjoy staying in historic hotels and the Fairmont Copley Plaza did not dissappoint. The room was very comfortable and housekeeping and Emmanuel at the front desk were great to interact with as were the rest of the staff. That said, there were a few concerns. The mirror in the bathroom was peeling badly and needed to be repaired. It looked shabby. There were no instructions to be found on how to operate the television or the coffee maker. Fortunately our daughter was familiar with the coffee maker, the television remained a mystery. We were provided towels that were frayed and again somewhat shabby. Relatively minor but still not to be expected in a $800.00 a night room in a hotel like the Fairmont Copley Plaza.
