Winter Mountain Adventure Program

In the early 20th century, Swiss guides hired by The Chateau introduced countless guests to the wonders of the Canadian Rockies. In those days, the hotel closed over the winter, but the guides stayed on as caretakers. They soon introduced local residents to a newfangled winter activity: skiing. The initial reaction was skeptical, as the locals deemed snowshoes to be the best form of winter travel. Skiing, however, was fun in addition to being practical, and it soon caught on. By 1917 there were enough skiers to form the Banff Ski Club. Today, the Banff/Lake Louise region is a major North American ski destination, attracting the world’s finest competitive athletes as well as recreational skiers.

The legacy of Swiss guiding continues at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. Guests can now enjoy guided cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, snow shoeing and hiking with a Mountain Adventure Guide. For guests of every age and activity level, a wonderful winter adventure awaits them in our very own backyard.
