Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen, the nearest town from Fairmont Mayakoba, is a dynamic village where the evenings can be either romantic or full of salsa, Cuban, lounge or Mexican music. The 5th avenue is alive at night as there are several clubs and bars that cater to every taste. We strongly recommend walking from club to club to experience different ambiances and crowds. Perhaps during your walking experience, you will find the Marimba or Statues that brighten up the street.

This ecological park and archaeological area, dedicated to the Mayan and Mexican cultures, and to preserving the environment and the ecology of the area is 25 minutes from the resort. Xcaret is an ecological park for all ages, with several activities, ideal for those who want to learn more about the Mayan Culture. As an evening activity, the Xcaret Spectacular Night is recommended for those looking to experience authentic traditions, culture and folklore. Evening shows begin at 7pm (ask for schedules as this is subject to seasonal variations).

A 45-minute ferry ride departs every 30 minutes from Playa del Carmen (10-15 minutes from Fairmont Mayakoba) to the magical island of Cozumel. The island is famous worldwide for its coral reefs and sea life. We recommend snorkeling; many places rent the necessary equipment, deep sea-fishing, or kayaking. Chankanaab Park, a Marine National Park, features the only inland coral reef formation in the world. The park is home to the world-renowned exotic fish ecosystem and natural aquarium. Punta Sur Light House is an ecological park and nature reserve that features a breathtaking natural environment of mangrove jungles, white sand beaches and coral reef at the south end of the island. There you can see over 220 species of birds, iguanas, and giant turtles. To experience an archeological tour, visit San Gervasio, El Cedral or El Caracol, where you can discover cities built by the Mayans.

This ecological park and archaeological area with turtle and dolphin sanctuaries and a research center is 50 minutes from the resort.

The archaeological zone at Tulúm combines the mystery of the ancient civilization with the singular beauty of the Caribbean Sea. Tulúm is 1 hour from the resort.

This sightseeing destination is surrounded by shallow lakes and accessed by “sac-bes,” a network of formal limestone roads built by the Maya over 1,000 years ago. Coba is 1 1/2 hours from the resort.

Sian Ka'an
Included in the World Heritage List by UNESCO, this nature reserve is the third-largest protected area in Mexico. Offering one-of-a-kind sightseeing in Cancun, it is home to nearly every kind of the region's wildlife, and gives guests the chance to explore 27 Mayan sites. Sian Ka'an is 1 1/2 hours from the resort.

Chichén Itzá
This is one of the most impressive cities of the Mayan culture and was recently recognized as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. Chichen Itza is 2.5-hour drive from Fairmont Mayakoba (one way). A full day spent at this archeological wonder is highly recommended in order to find the magical meaning of every structure, such as the El Castillo (The Castle), and El Templo de los Guerreros (The temple of the Warriors). Chichen Itza was architecturally designed with perfect symmetry, which is a testament to the equinox ceremony that takes place every year on March 21st, where millions of visitors gather to observe the movement of the Kukulkan God (a snake) coming down from El Castillo. This is an amazing event that exemplifies how the Mayans designed their palaces so that they are perfectly aligned with the universe.
