Since opening in 1889, The Savoy has played host to a galaxy of stars from stage and screen including Katharine Hepburn, Charlie Chaplin and Marlene Dietrich. These guests form the inspiration for A Time For Reflection a new collection of paintings by renowned artist, McAlpine Miller. Hailed as one of the most collectable artists of the moment, McAlpine Miller has garnered international praise for his distinctive style of painting.

As The Savoy’s artist-in-residence McAlpine Miller fully immersed himself in the rich history of The Savoy spending time looking through the hotel archives and also in the hotel itself. Elements of The Savoy, both past and modern, can be seen in the layers of these intricately painted works such as the original cover of The Savoy Cocktail Book, the hotel guestcards, the reopening date of 10.10.10 and interiors of the hotel.

McAlpine Miller graduated with a BA(Hons) in painting and drawing at Glasgow School of Art and has shown his work throughout the UK, USA, Italy and France and his work can be found in collections around the world. Using subtle tones, McAlpine Miller creates the illusion of transparencies with his works fading one idea into another evoking fading memories and future hopes.

A Time For Reflection
will hang in the Thames Foyer at The Savoy. It is one of the most popular parts of The Savoy and is where guests enjoy the hotel’s award-winning afternoon tea. The collection continues the long association The Savoy has enjoyed with artists from Whistler sketching the scaffolding as the hotel was under construction to Monet staying in the early 20th century and painting some of his famous views of the Thames.

“Selecting an artist to follow in the footsteps of Monet, Picasso and Whistler was an immense challenge as was choosing the appropriate subjects for the artworks,” comments Kiaran MacDonald, Managing Director of The Savoy. “But in the end we only had to look to the rich history of The Savoy which continually inspires and excites everyone who both visits and works at the hotel. We are incredibly proud of this collection of paintings by McAlpine Miller. They are now themselves a chapter in The Savoy’s story and we are sure they will delight guests for years to come.”

Artist’s Statement by McAlpine Miller

“This series of 8 paintings concentrates on two essential elements: the sheer majesty and beauty that is The Savoy together with the glamour of iconic idols that have been and will continue to be an integral part of this historic hotel. These 8 subjects not only serve to remind us of an era of great hope and aspirations but also allow us to consider both progress and future achievement.

Having gone through something of a renaissance, The Savoy has continued to achieve a standard which might otherwise be lost in this throwaway society where everything is replaceable. The paintings hope to both remind us of the more important elements behind the character and the opportunities which lie ahead. The foundations remain strong with powerful suggestions. Intricate ideas are simplified but add to the illusion of grandeur. Colour, light and tone combine to suggest a positive and rewarding future.

Looking closely we may even recognise a part of ourselves.”
