The Ultimate Monet Experience

To celebrate our collaboration with The National Gallery and its new Monet exhibition, The Credit Suisse Exhibition: Monet & Architecture, 9 April – 29 July 2018, we have created the Ultimate Monet Experience at The Savoy.

The exhibition at The National Gallery marks the first of its kind, taking a look at Monet’s career through the buildings he painted in Normandy, in Rouen, in Paris, Venice and London; including five of the original paintings that Monet created of the views from his rooms at The Savoy.

Monet, The Savoy and the London fog

Monet considered returning to London a number of times since his stay in 1870–1. It was a city he had much enjoyed. His plan was realised in 1899 when he spent some weeks in September and October staying at The Savoy and painting from a balcony on the 6th floor. He returned in 1900 to work for most of February and March, this time from the 5th floor of The Savoy, and again for a longer stint from late January to April 1901.

From his rooms at The Savoy, Monet enjoyed panoramic views over the River Thames with Charing Cross Bridge to the right and Waterloo Bridge to the left. He painted some of his most famous works from these views and, in a 1900 letter to his wife Alice, he wrote ‘When I got up I was terrified to see that there was no fog, not even the shadow of a fog. I was devastated… but little by little the smoke and fog returned’. In a letter from the same year on Savoy writing paper, Monet went so far as to say, ‘London would be quite ugly if it was not for the fog’.
