Reminiscent of the hot springs that beckoned travellers over 100 years ago, the pulsating waterfalls and the mineral pool in the heart of the Banff spa soothe troubled spirits.
The Beginning
William Cornelius Van Horne had a vision to bring the beauty of the Canadian Rocky Mountains to the rest of the world. He commissioned blueprints for an impressive hotel to be built at the convergence of the Bow and Spray River, in what is now known as Canada's first National Park. Construction began in 1887 and the hotel publically opened on June 1, 1888.
By the start of the twentieth century, the Banff Springs luxury Hotel had developed into one of the top three mountain getaways in North America. Disaster struck in 1926 when the original wooden hotel burnt down. It was rebuilt larger and in its present appearance commencing in 1928.
Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression
Throughout the 1920s and 30s, the hotel was able to combine day-to-day hotel life with the concept of luxurious hotel living. The depression played a part in the 'golden era' as well.
Through the 1940s to 60s, the hotel struggled to reclaim the success it had before the war. The hotel went through a significant change, adapting to the economics of the time. Transportation, convenience and availability to monetary funds jointly changed the whole perspective of the hotel.
"Since we can't export the scenery, we'll have to import the tourists."
William Cornelius Van Horne
By the 70s, the hotel reached a pivotal point. For the first time, Banff Springs remained open for the winter season, becoming a year-round resort destination. The 80s then brought expansion and renovation back to the hotel.

Staying at the Banff Springs Hotel is truly like staying in a castle, no wonder they call it Canada's Castle in the Rockies.
Everything was seamless. A positive location for the event we were celebrating.
The Banff Springs hotel is an amazing experience. The rooms are nice and updated with lots of space. They provide all the little things that make a difference to me when staying in a hotel (glass water and wine drinkware, corkscrew, mini fridge, full-size personal care products in the bathroom, etc.) The restaurants on the property are fabulous with great food and exceptional drink menu.
Telecomms issue was unresolved, but having fixed it now on returning to Calgary, here's a learning for the front desk. On arrival to Canada I installed my Mexican SIM into an iPhone as my Android was having an issue. Unfortunately at the Hotel I could not access the Telus system as set up on the phone, so was looking to reset the phone to Rogers. At the hotel when trying to access an option to change the carrier from Telus to Rogers (as is the setting for my normal Android phone on past trips back to Canada), there was only Telus to choose!!! no other carrier. The hotel front desk provided me with transportation too and from the Rogers retailer in the mall, there I received zero assistance but admittingly I had difficulty conversing with the retail clerk as all seemed too much for the person i.e zero customer service just blank looks. Returning to Calgary I was immediately able to access multiple service providers to set the phone to Rogers and then my Mexican Telcel provider was immediately accessed and now i'm a happy camper. I suggest you have some technical expert test at the Hotel for access to more than one service provider. Maybe it was just that my 3G / 4G phone is too old? but in any event not being able to stay in contact over mobile with Mexico while in Canada and my associates in Banff attending the ASET AGM meetings was very detrimental to my mental health and social and professional needs. Otherwise our stay was perfect.......
Attended an Education conference and added on a few personal days.
Privileged to stay in a Gold Floor room for six nights. The food offerings were amazing and the desk staff always friendly and helpful. House keeping a little hit and miss (not consistent) over the six nights, so let the hotel down. Room 549 needs work done around the door to prevent light getting in over night and keeping you awake as the bed faces the door.
Initial issues at check-in, room had stains on rug and amenities pre-arranged were not in room.
Business trip turned memorable. After last minute needing to bring our dog, the hotel truly turned into the “furmont” for our pup. While I was at a conference, my wife and dog were able to explore the beautiful scenery, and the staff made sure all of our guests were well taken care of.
Checked in on Saturday for a day away, and stayed on the Gold Floor, everything was awesome
