Wailea Families and Kid Friendly Activities: Maui Family Friendly

‘Ohana a me Keiki (Families & Kids)

Maui is made for long sun-soaked days of family fun. There are plenty of places to explore and kiddos to play, either on the land or out at sea. And when the little ones get hungry, don’t fret. The island is full of laid back, kid-friendly restaurants – you just got to know where to look.

Beach. Pool. Beach. Repeat. Kids of all ages love the sand, surf and swimming pool and Wailea just happens to be home to some of the best beaches in the world. If you have little ones, pick up a beach pail at the front desk for sand castle building. If your kiddos are a little older, rent a boogie board or snorkel at the beach pavilion or check out a two-person kayak. Tip: the earlier you hit the beach, the calmer the ocean will be. If poolside lounging is more your speed, consider renting a cabana for the day.

What kid doesn’t like pizza? Maui has some incredible pizza restaurants with wood burning ovens, hand made dough and fresh, local ingredients. Kids can go with the traditional pepperoni or cheese toppings and grown-ups can indulge with fresh herbs, feta and goat cheeses and organic meats. Top picks for pizza are Manoli’s (Wailea), Fabiani’s (Kihei) and Flatbread & Co. (Paia - A great stop on your way back from Hana!).

Top keiki-friendly things to do

  • Maui Ocean Center: explore Hawaii’s underwater world up close with over 60 exhibits that include coral, fish, turtles, sharks and jellies.
  • Keiki (Children) Dining Program: Not something to do, as much as just a great deal. At many restaurants throughout the resort, kids five and under eat for free.
  • Submarine: Yes. An actual submarine. This 46 passenger, air-conditioned, submarine dives down to 120 feet in order to show you ocean floor. (The tour’s height requirement is 36 inches.)
  • Maui Golf & Sports Park: Enjoy miniature golf, bumper boats, rock climbing, and x-treme trampoline
  • Upcountry: Head up Haleakala to Surfing Goat Dairy where kids can come face-to-face with goats and parents can sample made-on-Maui goat cheese.
  • Zip Lining: Great for adventurous families. Many courses are keiki-friendly.

Chesha’s Faves/Tips

  • Lao Valley: Head to Iao Valley for the afternoon. It’s packed with easy hiking trails and the creek is usually low flowing, so kids can play and get wet. Tip: Grab a picnic lunch at Caffe Ciao deli or stop in Wailuku town before or after. Maui Bake Shop (with the blue awning) has wonderful sandwiches and treats.
  • Hosmer’s Grove: Explore short hiking on the slopes of Haleakalā within the Haleakalā National Park.  Look out for Native plants and birds. A nice hike for older children and adults alike.
  • Sugar Cane Train: Take a ride on Maui’s Sugar Cane train while learning about Maui’s connection to sugar.  Enjoy lunch in Lahaina town afterward at many family-friendly restaurants.
  • Giggle Hill:  This huge park is perfect for a picnic and playtime with the little ones. Located in Haiku, it has wide spaces, a beautiful climate and awesome play equipment.
