BACKGROUND
In Vancouver, artists are known for taking inspiration from nature, and The Fairmont Waterfront wants to bring this experience to visiting children. Granting young visitors a chance to connect with the environment, show off their creative abilities and get rewarded for it, the hotel is proud to partner with the Get to Know Society to inspire youth to adventure outdoors and learn about busy pollinating bees and urban green spaces. Families who visit the Concierge desk can request all the necessary supplies to create a piece of artwork of the hotel’s happy hives and to book a fun and informational tour of the honeybee apiary and rooftop garden, filled with over 550,000 resident honeybees.
Once their masterpiece is complete, the onsite FedEx Office will scan the image and help enter it into a draw for an exciting Pollinator Week prize pack. For each family who enters the contest, The Fairmont Waterfront will give them a copy of the acclaimed book, Big City Bees, by award winning Canadian author, Maggie DeVries.
The Get to Know Society’s mandate is to endorse environmental education in order to raise a generation of children who are inherently aware of their impact on the environment, and how their positive interaction with local wildlife can help preserve our natural wonders for generations to come. The Get to Know Program ensures that young people are provided opportunities to spend more time outdoors. It has been proven that a detachment from nature can have a negative effect on the development of children.
The Fairmont Waterfront supports a sustainable lifestyle and believes that educating can never begin too early. There are so many environmental, health, and agricultural benefits that honeybees provide society and no human activity or ingenuity could ever replace the work of bees, and yet it is largely taken for granted. We make it our responsibility to promote importance of these amazing insects and are thankful for the opportunity to support local bee colonies on site in our very own apiary and by personally promoting the program awareness among our guests.
