Discover
Reminiscent of the hot springs that beckoned travellers over 100 years ago, the pulsating waterfalls and the mineral pool in the heart of the Banff spa soothe troubled spirits.
The Beginning
William Cornelius Van Horne had a vision to bring the beauty of the Canadian Rocky Mountains to the rest of the world. He commissioned blueprints for an impressive hotel to be built at the convergence of the Bow and Spray River, in what is now known as Canada's first National Park. Construction began in 1887 and the hotel publically opened on June 1, 1888.
By the start of the twentieth century, the Banff Springs luxury Hotel had developed into one of the top three mountain getaways in North America. Disaster struck in 1926 when the original wooden hotel burnt down. It was rebuilt larger and in its present appearance commencing in 1928.
Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression
Throughout the 1920s and 30s, the hotel was able to combine day-to-day hotel life with the concept of luxurious hotel living. The depression played a part in the 'golden era' as well.
Through the 1940s to 60s, the hotel struggled to reclaim the success it had before the war. The hotel went through a significant change, adapting to the economics of the time. Transportation, convenience and availability to monetary funds jointly changed the whole perspective of the hotel.
"Since we can't export the scenery, we'll have to import the tourists."
William Cornelius Van Horne
By the 70s, the hotel reached a pivotal point. For the first time, Banff Springs remained open for the winter season, becoming a year-round resort destination. The 80s then brought expansion and renovation back to the hotel.

I paid for a romantic spa package and despite trying to book ahead of time we weren’t able to get a spot during our stay. I was charged the 600-700 despite this and find it unacceptable to charge me for a service that was never given.

Valet at 50 dollars per day should park the vehicle in a garage. We spent 400 dollars in valet parking and our car was almost non drivable after day 8 since it was almost completely frozen from being outside for days, parked by the valet....who knows where. We switched to a hotel with FREE underground heated parking where it took the car 2 days to unfreeze!!! This is completely unacceptable and insane to have to pay 400 dollars for this!!! Why would the hotel put a family with a screaming infant next to our room to the point we could not sleep? Granted, the hotel tried to correct it the 2nd night by offering another room, but by that time the issue was resolved. We spent 8 nights in room 659 at a cost of 1020.00 dollars plus resort fees across from a busy elevator having to listen to people coming an going, totally unacceptable at the price we were paying! The bathroom in this room is the tiniest bathroom we have ever seen, no tub, just a shower, almost impossible to move in this bathroom. Infants in diapers in the hot tub and outside pool allowed, absolutely yikes, considering the hotel would have to shut the areas down should one of these babies poop in the pool. The hotel is over run with tourists in the daytime, no supervision where these non guests are going, some of them took the elevators and visited guest halls indiscriminately, including the pool area, which was locked only part of the time we were there. Food is beautifully presented, very pricey and the taste is mediocre. The staff was excellent all the way around, the service was impeccable. The free shows (Magician and Elton John) were outstanding. The New Years Eve Gala was nicely arranged, the food was returned by us, not very good, the music was decent, the DJ was very grumpy. We were only able to check out the hotel minus the crowd from outside the day before we left and found it amazing. We will NOT be back, our biggest dilemma was the pool area and most certainly being almost stranded with our car after having it parked outside for 8 days with the valet
Amazing experience, super friendly staff, breathtaking views, quality restaurants and bars, perfect location, and wonderful accommodation

we stayed 3 nights. our room was not good..poor location and noisy pipes
Service by staff was excellent and rooms very nicely furnished but size of rooms bathrooms and storage were extremely disappointing for price point. Further not having shuttle run by hotel to ski areas and town was a problem as the town and municipal shuttles not convenient nor time efficient. Again for price point hotel should have its own shuttles.
Hi! This was my 3rd time at the castle. Everything was amazing as always. But I feel like the rooms on 4rd floor were smaller than the ones in the 5 floor. Maybe if you can include food 24hr something simple like snacks Hope to see you next year
My four nights at Fairmont Banff Springs were nothing short of excellent. The staff were friendly, attentive and helpful at all times and the hotel itself was well kept, well situated and fun to explore. The experiences I had the in restaurants onsite was fantastic and the facilities and activities at the hotel meant there was always something different to keep me busy if I wanted it. Will be coming back!
Booked 2 rooms for a family holiday over the new year. One room (a twin for our sons) was good with plenty of space and good sized bathroom. The other, a double for me and my wife was a large enough room, but with a ridiculously tiny bathroom and inadequate provision for clothing storage for a weeks holiday. Rooms were expensive, which is clearly to be expected in a luxury hotel over the holidays, however substantial “hidden” resort fees were then added on top which felt like an insult when it came to settling the final account and gave the sensation that it was all a bit of a rip off. Hotel facilities varied, some excellent restaurants and a lovely bar, but one or two spots are horrendously overpriced dishing up pretentious nonsense, so beware.

We were taken care of from the moment we got to the property until the moment we left. We loved every minute of our stay!
We had a wonderful trip. We had one issue with a Chef in the Vermillion Room, but Andre took care of it and us. We are so grateful for how well the staff treated us and we truly look forward to spending time at a Fairmont Hotel in the future.
