The Beginning
Fairmont Copley Plaza was built on the original site of the Museum of Fine Arts, which was in Copley Square from 1876 until 1909 when the museum moved into its existing building on Huntington Avenue. Dozens of horse-drawn carts took the museum’s collection of thousands of pieces of art approximately one mile down the street to the new museum.
Long regarded as a Boston institution, The Copley Plaza was formally opened on August 19, 1912, about 16 months after construction of the building began. Mayor of Boston John F. “Honey Fitz” Fitzgerald, President John F. Kennedy’s grandfather, presided over a reception for more than 1,000 guests, including local and national dignitaries, civic leaders, captains of industry, and stage and movie stars. So prestigious was The Copley Plaza’s opening that rooms had been booked 16 months in advance.
The Fairmont Copley Plaza is recognized as an innovator in the hotel industry. The hotel is known for these industry firsts: the first completely air-conditioned hotel in Boston, the first hotel with an international reservations system, the first hotel anywhere to accept credit cards, and the first to offer direct telephone dialing for guests.
During Prohibition, the Oak Bar was known as the Merry-Go-Round Bar, a lively gathering place. Patrons celebrated the end of Prohibition in 1933 at The Copley Plaza's famous Merry-Go-Round Bar, which featured a working merry-go-round. It remained a popular gathering place through the 1970s. Pieces of the Merry-Go-Round Track have been preserved in the floor of OAK Long Bar + Kitchen.
"The opening presented to Boston one of the most colorful and brilliant pictures the city has ever seen. It marked a new era in hotel-keeping, not only in Boston but in the entire country."
As one newspaper noted
During World War II, elevator operators had to be at least 65 years of age, releasing younger workers for war production activities.

Many things we are used to worked well. Housekeeping services ( Marie Sula (sp.?) Is exceptional. Breakfast buffet is always one of our favorite amenities on the Gold Floor, where we aways stay in one of the suites.(Rudy, one of the servers, is one of our favorite people as he goes above and beyond to make the breakfast experience the best way to start each day). We did notice fewer staff members at the hotel, particularly at the bellman positions. Also, while minor, we noticed that unlike every other stay we've had while staying in a suite on the Gold Floor, we did not receive the usual coupon for a complimentary cocktail at the Long Bar, nor the chocolates on arrival or at evening turndown service. Again, these are minor, but they were amenities that made the Fairmont stand out from other good hotels we've stayed at in other places. The bottom line, though is that the staff whom we've come to know are wonderful, clearly the Fairmont Copley's greatest assets.

Everything was generally good but regular race runners were definitely treated as second-tier compared with the VIPs and elite runners, including with access to spaces, including post-race, where I was quite rudely snapped at when trying to get to the elevators to get to my room.

When we got to the room, it was dirty. Dirty Kleenex on the bathroom floor, old food in the fridge. I asked for room service but after they left the Kleenex was still there and remained for the balance of our 5 day stay. Business center is a joke with non working printers there for decoration.
Comfortable, elegant and sophisticated surroundings. Very polite and helpful staff. Room had all the amenities and comfortable bed, robe, furnishings. Would definitely stay again
Location is excellent and the service is fantastic
Everything overall was quite nice and I hope to return. However on my first night another family had been checked into the same room - they were quite horrified when they they tried to access the room with the key and I yelled out. I’m sure they had hoped to have a room unoccupied. Fortunately I had that little bar across the door. This was a family with young children so I was startled but not frightened. The front desk did call to check in on me. I have never had this happen before. I did notice later that one of my keys didn’t work - perhaps the machine wasn’t working correctly.
Friendly service, good meeting facilities, big enough room. Some noice in the room due to big airconditiong units on the backyard

Friendly staff and nice rooms
Gold room floor is top notch. Great honor system drinks and food. Especially breakfast! Receptionist staff is welcoming and helpful. Couldn’t get a restaurant table nearby at popular spot, but concierge fixed that with a phone call. The Fairmont is old school Boston elegance. My only option when I am in Boston for business or leisure.
