Whispers in the Halls

Fairmont Banff Springs has inspired thousands of stories around the guests who have stayed within these walls. From royal visits to political conferences, the Banff Springs Hotel has been an important meeting place for the movers and shakers of each era. Some even say that certain guests have never left.

Hospitality Beyond Time

Sam the Bellman is said to assist guests with directions and even help to unlock difficult doors. Its no suprise that one of our most famous ghost stories features an example of hospitality that goes above expectations and beyond this mortal plane. After all, this is what Fairmont Banff Springs is known for.

Renovations Become Legends

The first Banff Springs Hotel was opened in 1888, and after serveral additions, reconstruction after a fire, and many renovations and updates the hotel looks quite different today. Guests who once valued communal spaces, writting rooms and lounges now look for larger suites for added privacy during their stay.

three haunted stories

This October, for the very first time, we are sharing the true stories behind the legends. With each passing decade, tales of the Ghost Bride, the Missing Room, and Sam the Bellman have grown into folklore. Now, we invite you to discover the stories as they live today. Rooted in history, enriched by imagination, and forever part of the Castle’s character.

The story of

The Ghost Bride

The story of the Ghost Bride has captivated guests for nearly a century. Legend speaks of a young bride in the late 1920s, radiant in white lace, who tragically fell to her death on the grand staircase before she ever reached her groom. Some say it was her veil, others a flicker of candlelight that startled her. What has endured is the vision: a woman in flowing white, gliding silently down the marble steps or appearing in the ballroom, forever poised between joy and heartbreak.

The Truth Revealed

Because no written record confirms a bride passing, or even being injured, around this time at the Banff Springs Hotel we must assume that this story was written by some creative staff member or guest over the years. Still, some guests claim they have felt her presence. Perhaps it is the romance of the Rockies that keeps her legend alive, or perhaps it is her image minted on a commemorative coin and printed on a stamp. The truth is that this tale has become a Canadian legend of it's own; part of the history that makes the Banff Springs experience unforgettable.

The Story of

The Missing Room

Among the mysteries of the hotel, the “Missing Room” is one of the most enduring. Guests whisper of a vanished suite, of a door that once opened to a grand room now sealed, walled, and erased from blueprints. The reason why this room had to be boarded up have changed over the years, but the typical story speaks of tragic events, erased from memory, yet lingering in the walls themselves.

Missing Room Unsealed

In truth, the mid-century redesign of the hotel created the opportunity to combine two small guest rooms together to create one larger suite with a single door. The extra door was removed but a pot light in the hallway was left behind indicating the space where the door once was. Over the years, adventurous spirit hunters would sometimes knock on this wall disrupting the guests sleeping on the other side and the guests would sometimes knock back. This has only perpetuated the legend of the missing room.

The Story Of

Sam The Bellman

Not all haunted stories are sorrowful. Some, like Sam The Bellman, embody the heart of Fairmont hospitality. The story is that Sam served as a bellman for decades, remembered by colleagues and guests alike for his warmth and dedication. When he passed in the 1970's, many thought his story was complete but Sam had other plans. Guests have shared accounts of a helpful bellman matching Sam’s exact description who appeared when they needed him most: unlocking a stubborn door, offering guidance through the maze of hallways, then vanishing before thanks could be given.

THE REAL BELLMAN

There is truth to the legend of Sam The Bellman. This story is based around a real bellman who worked at the hotel as late as the 1950's. He is said to have been very popular, charasmatic, and a natural host. Beloved by colleagues and guests alike, perhaps his impact was so strong that he himself was not easy to forget. Sam’s legend is one of comfort, a reminder that true hospitality leaves an impression so lasting, it transcends even time.
