A Half-Day Itinerary

From Fairmont Nile City to the Pyramids

The Last Wonder of the Ancient World

From Fairmont Nile City on the Corniche El Nil, the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the Pyramid of Khafre, the Pyramid of Menkaure, and the Great Sphinx of Giza are approximately 22 kilometers away on the Giza Plateau. Built around 2,560 BCE and standing for over 4,500 years, the Giza Pyramid Complex is the only surviving member of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. This is how to visit in a half day, start to finish.

How Far Are the Pyramids from Fairmont Nile City?

The Giza Pyramid Complex is approximately 22 km from Fairmont Nile City, with a drive of 30–45 minutes in light traffic and up to 90 minutes during peak hours (4:00–7:00 PM).

We recommend departing at 7:30 AM to arrive at opening, before the heat and crowds. For a seamless half-day visit, our Hotel Concierge can arrange a private car with a waiting driver for your return journey. Alternative transportation services are also available, though they may not wait at the site.

What Time Should You Leave the Hotel?

Preferrably at 7:30 AM. The Giza Pyramid Complex opens at 8:00 AM daily. The first two hours offer the best combination of cool temperatures, manageable crowds, and clear morning light for photography. By 11:00 AM the plateau is significantly busier and fully exposed to the sun. In summer months, midday temperatures regularly exceed 40°C. A 7:30 AM departure returns you to Fairmont Nile City by early afternoon.

What Will You See at the Giza Pyramid Complex?

The Giza Pyramid Complex contains four major sites within one ticket area: the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the Pyramid of Khafre, the Pyramid of Menkaure, and the Great Sphinx of Giza. A single general admission ticket covers the exterior of all three pyramids and the Sphinx viewing area. The Solar Boat Museum and pyramid interiors require separate tickets.

  • The Great Pyramid of Khufu

Originally 146.5 meters tall, now 138.8 meters, built from approximately 2.3 million stone blocks. The largest pyramid ever built. Walking around the base takes around 20 minutes and gives a sense of scale that no photograph conveys accurately.

  • The Pyramid of Khafre

Sits on higher ground and appears taller than Khufu's. It retains original smooth limestone casing at the peak, the clearest surviving example of how all three pyramids once looked.

  • The Pyramid of Menkaure

The smallest of the three. Its surrounding complex, three satellite pyramids and a valley temple is well-preserved and typically the least crowded area on the plateau.

  • The Great Sphinx

A 73-meter-long limestone statue with a human face and a lion's body, believed to represent Pharaoh Khafre. The viewing area offers the most iconic angle on the plateau, Sphinx in the foreground, and the Pyramid of Khafre directly behind.

Should You Go Inside the Great Pyramid?

Only if confined spaces are not an issue. The interior passage to the burial chamber is narrow, low, and steep and visitors must crouch and climb in both directions. The chamber contains Khufu's granite sarcophagus but no paintings, hieroglyphs, or decoration. Entry requires a separate ticket and adds 45 to 60 minutes to the visit.

For most half-day visitors, skipping the interior and spending that time at the Sphinx and Solar Boat Museum is the better use of limited time.

What Should You Know Before You Go?

Shoes and clothing: The entire plateau is unpaved stone and sand. Comfortable walking shoes are essential. Dress modestly, covered shoulders and knees are appropriate. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and water; there is no shade anywhere on the open plateau.

Hawkers: Camel and horse handlers approach visitors throughout the site. A calm, firm "no thank you" is sufficient. If you want a camel photo, agree the price before mounting, negotiation is expected.

Photography: Outdoor photography is unrestricted. Photography inside the pyramids requires a separate ticket. Drone photography is not permitted anywhere on the plateau.

Tickets: General admission covers the plateau and exterior of the three pyramids. Separate tickets apply for entering Khufu's pyramid, entering Khafre's pyramid, the Solar Boat Museum, and the Valley Temple. Ticket prices are set by the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and change periodically, verify current pricing through our concierge team before your visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you visit the Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum on the same day?

Yes. The Grand Egyptian Museum is 2 km from the Giza Pyramid Complex, a 5-minute drive. The most efficient approach is GEM in the morning (9:00 AM to 1:00 PM) and Pyramids in the early afternoon. This makes for a full day, not a half day.

Is a guide necessary for the Pyramids?

Not essential for the exterior visit, information panels are posted throughout. But a licensed Egyptologist guide significantly enriches the experience, particularly for understanding the astronomical alignment of the three pyramids and the engineering behind them. Our concierge team can recommend vetted licensed guides.

Is a half-day enough time?

Yes, for most visitors. Three to four hours covers all four main sites at a comfortable pace. Entering one or two pyramid interiors adds up to 90 minutes. A 7:30 AM departure from Fairmont Nile City returns you to the hotel by early afternoon.

Are the Pyramids safe to visit?

Yes. The Giza Plateau is one of Egypt's most heavily policed tourist sites. Standard precautions apply. Watch belongings in crowded areas and agree prices before any optional service.
